Is there a budgeting spreadsheet available?

Hi, I'm a newbie at budgeting but I'm really looking forward to keeping track of my money and being able to see where each penny goes.

I've completed Martin's budget and now I'm wondering if there is a similar spreadsheet that I can use for actual day to day expenditure as it happens? So I can see if I'm sticking to my budget as I go.

I could use the same sheet and have it add up over the year but I'd like the option of adding more details such as a date and place for each purchase.

If anyone knows of such a tool (preferably free!) I'd be most grateful to hear of it!

Thank you!

YNAB is very popular with many MSE folks.

There is a huge thread about it over on another board https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5027025
  • Thanks! I've had a look and it does look like the best paid option for me from those available. I was hoping there might be a free option somewhere, even if it meant more manual inputting.

I guess everyone has to make money somehow though and, if I had the knowhow, I might find myself wanting to charge for it too!

http://www.moneymanagerex.org has budgeting features. It also shares between PC and mobile.

    It's free too.
  • I'll check it out anoncol, thanks!

There are ways to get a full licence for next to nothing - all discussed in that long thread.

But even if you had to pay the full price, it would probably pay for itself in less than a year.
  • I've also heard you have to use Dropbox or cloud sync, neither of which I particularly fancy. Is this necessary if I only use the desktop version?

Maybe I'll discover on the thread, I'm only about 4 pages in so far!

Thats only if you want to sync. If you only use the mobile or only the desktop, you can just keep it local.
  • Thanks Dobbibill, just what I was looking for!

Anoncol, that's good to know. Think I might be eligible for the free student version, if so I'll definitely be signing up when I get my internet sorted.
