  • Spoke to SETANTA tonight to cancel the contract I have had with them since October. They tried to persuade me to take up their reduced price offer for the next three months - no chance! Got through to cancellations and was told that as today is the 13th my contract will cease on the 13th January (so far so good) then was told that I would still be billed on the 11th of January as that is my billing date. Told them I would cancel the DD (unfortunately, its a credit card thing so I can't!) and the monkey (sorry to all monkeys out there!) told me that they would use their 'high powered lawyers' to sue me and destroy me credit rating. NICE PEOPLE. They did say that the best way to get best value for money was to cancel on the 11th January but I am too busy having a life to be sure I won't forget. My advice - STAY CLEAR, STAY VERY CLEAR AND TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO DO THE SAME!!

I got to cancel with these idiots so when would the best time to cancel? I took the policy out on the 29th October so it will be the 29th Dec?

I think i just cancel it tomorrow and get rid of it on 14th Jan

They are incredibly stupid I agree.

I called on the 2nd Jan top cancel, got the usual offers but asked for cancellation. Was then told service will stop on the 2nd Feb but I'd be billed for a full month from 18th Jan. told them I was cancelling the Direct Debit and would pay the remaining balance by cheque.

Today the "Your DD has been cancelled" letter came in. I called, waited 5 mins, got through to monkey who spent about 5 minutes collecting my details, then put me on hold and 10 minutes later I was cut off.

I've now emailed them telling them that I wont be renewing the DD or the service. We'll see what happens on the 20th and the 2nd!

Well, there's me thinking I'd read everything I could about my deal (3 Months @ £5 a month) and then lo and behold 1 month after they took the £15 another £5 taken from my Credit card.
Obviously I know now from reading previous posts there is a £10 connection charge but I can't find that mentioned on the t & c's for my specific promotion at all, but I can live with it I suppose.
What is worrying is the never ending stories of being unable to to cancel! I signed up on Nov 5th 07 so I've worked out I need to cancel the subscription on the 5th Jan 08 and that gives me my 1 months notice (if I'm wrong correct me) now if Setanta continue to take money from my Credit card then I'll accidently lose said card and tell my CC company, they will then issue me with a replacement card that Setanta don't have the details of and therefore they can't take anymore money from me. That's my plan of preventative action. Any one else thought of doing it?

Cannot believe it! Wrote to Setanta last week giving my months notice and half expecting it to be ignored, how quick I was to judge them.
Today received letter saying their sorry I'm cancelling my sub and that they don't want me to go (God, it's like Tracey smith who I dumped at primary school all over again!) and that I can have another 3 months at a £5 a month! Will see how many times Liverpool are on and if it looks good then I'm going back in!
  • It seems Setanta cancellation policy is a joke!

I too have experienced major headaches trying to cancel.
Numerous hours spent on the telephone awaiting customer service dept, when you do get through you, you then find out you need to speak to an Account Manager, so yet again more time spent on hold.

And if you do get finally through to an account manager, who assured me that my account is now closed, be sure to check a few days later as my account it turns out was still active!!!

Well something I thought was going to cast me under a tenner has already cost me £50+ and is probably going to cost me more!!!

My advice to anyone out there thinking about taking up Setanta. Stay clear and watch it down the pub!!!

I too have encountered problems with this bunch of incompetent idiots, in fact i am still having problems nearly two months after cancelling,

Nov 07 - took advantage of a 2 month free trial out of the Daily Mirror, no connection fee AND no 30 days cancellation fee if cancelled before middle of jan

Jan 08 - finally got through to Setanta two days before the cut-off date after spending best part of a weekend on the phone, cancelled with a promise of never returning!

2 weeks later - on checking my bank account i noticed they had took £9.99 from my bank, i phoned them up (again took more than 10 attempts to get throught to the right department) and the operator told me it was because i needed to give 30 days notice!! after several minutes of heated conversation she admitted she was wrong and promised the money returned to my account within 30 days.

March 08 - today i checked my bank statement to find no money returned, i phoned Setanta Customer Services who told me they couldnt authorise a refund (which leads me to believe the previous operator must have been telling me lies) it was head office in Ireland that could only authorise refunds, she said she would email them and ask they ring me urgently (of course they have no number for me to ring them!) or i could write a letter of complaint to Fife. (wasnt aware Fife was in Ireland)

Really dont know if I can be bothered pursuing this for the sake of a tenner, but to me its the principle of the matter. Companies like this should not be allowed to treat its 'customers' or 'mugs' for one for a better word, like this.

I've never had the misfortune of dealing with a firm like this before..........i used to call the overseas call centres before i had setanta but i'd sooner deal with them that Setanta, any day of the week!

If your still a customer then good luck

i cancelled my 12 month contract today they offered me 3 months for £5 a month and i said no, they then tried to tell me as i cancelled on the day i get billed i would have to pay £15 at the end of the cancellation period due to my bill date being due on the 2nd of the month, i told them they cant do that he said we can so i then ended the call and cancelled my direct debit
  • Just wondering here, how many people have read the T&Cs properly where it advises you can write to Setanta at PO Box 182, The Quays, Newry, BT35 5AS, and realise your "Contract" is governed by the laws of The Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg.

If your address is in the United Kingdom any dispute can be dealt with by the courts in England and Wales. If your address is in the Republic of Ireland any dispute can be dealt with in the courts of England and Wales or the Republic of Ireland.
