This is a good point. Though I'm really suspecting I already get this. The HB has confused me so much. Looking at my banking, I get £373 a fortnight for ESA so that would be the £186, right?

Sorry my fibro fog is bad today.

    you do get it then.

earlier you said you got £109 a week.

if you take a lodger, they disregard £20 of the rent you charge but then de3duct the rest from your housing benefit.
you will have to ask your HA for permission and will it be worth it for £20 a week?

I copied out what it says on the HB letter. It had an 'income' bit then an 'applicable amounts' bit.

I can't even work out if they are basing it on that anyway. The gross rent listed on the letter is £131.58 which would be £526.32...
    I'm baffled.
thats if you x it by 4 .... but your rent isn't 4 weekly... its monthly.
    monthly ( 131.58 x 52/12 = 32632) so its right.
you just haven't notified them of your rent increase

    that was what confused me.
it looked like you were saying your income was £109, but that the council were using different applicable amounts ;)

Rent and HB is only applicable to 48 weeks per year, not 52, so her original figures for rent and HB appear to be correct.

even if the rent is charged over 48 weeks (calendar monthly), housing benefit is calculated on a weekly/fortnightly/4 weekly basis, so it will tally up at the end of the year
  • If a claimant is charged 48 weeks rent then at my local authority we don't pay anything for the rent free periods otherwise if someone only claimed for a few months they would receive less if the 48 weeks of rent liability was spread over 52 weeks.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
