I'm so sorry to hear of the cheque-signing problem, phoenixx. I hope you get something sorted out soon. I expect someone much more financially knowledgeable than me will be along soon and advise who you should contact about it.

This is something completely different but related in a way. I live in a very small rural community in which many of the residents are very well-heeled (not including me and OH in that group ;)). There is a major fund-raising initiative underway to set up a community facility and I'm on the committee. I keep being pestered to take on the job of treasurer for the group:eek: (goodness knows why). Of course no one knows a thing about my financial problems and I desperately want it to stay that way;). If I offer my services would I need a credit check? Committee members for some of the other roles were just co-opted. I'd be handling donations and other sums and presumably be a cheque signatory. Currently I only have a basic bank account, I can't even get one with a chequebook for myself:o. I know it's not the same but the fact that I'm not allowed a personal chequebook suggests no one will consider me financially trustworthy.

I keep putting them off but they keep asking because I can't come up with a valid reason why not:eek:

Please keep us posted of developments in your situation, phoenixx. Good Luck:beer:

    Hi Carboot
Thanks for your reply and kind words. After my recent experience, I would stay well away from anything that might bring upon you the kind of shame and humiliation I currently feel. Maybe you could casually ask some questions about what being a treasurer might involve...You could then say you are too busy/aren't interested in that side of it if a search of your credit file is involved. I honestly feel like a criminal. Just because I have defaults on my personal file does not mean that I cannot professionally deal with my responsibilities. But it seems that this will stalk me now in my career. I reckon that will put the mockers on any promotion hopes I may have had :(

  • Hi everyone and a Happy New Year. I'm in a bit of a rush so I'll keep it brief but my hubby's debt has been sold to Pra Group, firstly does anyone have any experience of what they are like to deal with and secondly, I will ring SC in the morning to let them know the change but do we also need to contact Pra Group separately. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Scaredofdebt, we have had both of our MBNA accounts transferred to the PRA group. I have only needed to speak to them a couple of times just to confirm the payment amount as per our DMP and let them know that SC had changed the account details from MBNA to them. The people I have spoken to over the phone were lovely and we had no problems with them accepting the payments. We have heard nothng else from them - they seem like a decent firm :)

    Take care,

Then yesterday, but of a blow - I was asked at work to take a more senior role which involves signing off cheques on the company bank account. It never crossed my mind that this would present a problem. I was utterly embarrassed yesterday when the company's bank rang me to say I could not be a signatory as the search (presume something like Experian) had found something (they wouldn't say what) that precluded me from doing it.
Firstly, what can I do about checking what searches are throwing up on me? I presume it's the defaults and the DMP that are the problem. I also do not know what to say to my boss - the bank said it was down to me to explain why I can't do the cheque signing...what on earth do I say? I know I have made bad decisions in the past but I am now sorting it and the last time I was a credit risk was 2011...Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Hi Phoenixx,

Sorry to hear of your difficulties :(

Do you get on well with your boss and can you trust their confidentiality? I know it is embarrassing and humiliating but could you tell them the truth? Just say that unfortunately a number of years ago you got yourself into a bit of a pickle financially and for the past 4-5 years you have now been in an agreement paying off these debts regularly and in agreement with your creditors. Tell them that unfortunately it has left a mark on your credit file but that you are still an honest, reliable and trustworthy member of their staff and would really appreciate it if they would consider allowing you to continue with the senior role. Could they offer you a 'trial' period so that you could demonstate to them that you are competent for the role (which we all know you are) :) Just let them know that although you may have made some mistakes in the past with credit you would appreciate them not holding this against you now.

Good luck and keep us posted :)

  • Thanks BDFSH, that's very reassuring to know. My hubby actually spoke to them earlier and he said they were fine and very pleasant. His was a MBNA debt so I suspect my will be sold soon too.

Hi Phoenix, that's very harsh and I can imagine puts you in a very difficult position. I agree with what BDFSH said though, could you not speak to your boss and let them know your situation. It will not be an easy conversation and some people cannot be trusted so it maybe easier said than done. I was worried as my hubby has a works credit card, he only can use it at certain suppliers and he is not responsible for paying it. I was concerned about the new SC terms and conditions about obtaining extra credit, I'm not sure if it's different when it's work related but having looked on his credit file there is no trace of it so they must not credit check the staff but it's a worry. Take care and hope things work out for you x

Thanks BDFSH - I could talk to him I think. As you say - a hard conversation but may need to be done. The trial period idea sounds good and I may suggest it. After all - I have nothing to lose - they can only say 'no'...I do think that those of us trying to deal with our debt and having years of evidence that we are paying it back and in agreements could be given a second chance. Hi Phoenixx

Not a lot to add - but I think BDFSH has offered some wise words and a possible way forward.

I just wanted to wish you the best of luck. No matter what the outcome, don't beat yourself up. You are a strong person, dealing with you debts and as such you should be proud of yourself. Don't let this hiccup with work get you down.

Self-managed doesn't really start until February because we let the January payment to SC go through. So all predators will be getting payment from SC shortly.

Other than that....we haven't had any responses from predators regarding our letters about moving to self-managed. So it's going really well ;)
