How lovely to have the end in sight. It must be a wonderful feeling to have so little debt left:T.
Congratulations on your efforts especially the success in getting PPI and F&F settlements:beer:.0 -
So, am I overthinking this?
The other day I logged onto stepchanges online DMP portal for the first time, I'm moving from a token payment plan to DMP on the 1st Feb.
When I logged in, two of my debts were incorrectly showing against the bank who I hold my current account with instead of my previous bank.
I rang them and explained, they updated their records and said they'd send proposals out.
I've thought on it this morning, and rung them back, they confirmed that they sent a payment proposal, my soa and list of debts to my current account provider
I'm worried, that while they'll reject the proposal because I don't have debts with my current bank that they'll look at the details stepchange have provided and think we'd rather not have this guy bank with us
The woman at stepchange assured me this wouldn't happen but did indeed confirm that a raft of information would have been sent to them in error
Any thoughts, this is quite worrying0 -
I read your post with interest, Jon81. I can see why the situation made you worried. Congratulations on starting a DMP though. It's not an easy decision to make, is it?. When things are running smoothly though you'll be so relieved you did it:T
I imagine the person at StepChange was right about your current bank not throwing you out. As you have no debt with them they surely have no problems with having you as an account-holder. Your account is already in place and the only problems people seem to have with current accounts appear to be when trying to open new accounts with banks once they're on the DMP.
My own disquiet about the situation is that StepChange made such a major error in the first place:eek:. I've been with them for very nearly 3 years now and (as far as I know;)) all paperwork and other communication about my accounts and debts have been sent to the right place. I certainly wouldn't be happy to know that my debt and payment details were being sent to someone I'd prefer not to know about them. I guess if you've a monthly DD to StepChange already set up your current bank will realise that you have some financial difficulties though.
Try not to worry about it. I'm sure one of the thread members wiser than me will be along to reassure you before long:beer:0 -
Hi Jon
Yeah thats quite a big error by SC revealing details of your dmp but I suppose your bank can find this out from running a credit search and as long as you have no issues with your bank, i dont think this will be a problem. However i do understand why you are concerned.

SC have breached the Data Protection Act if they have incorrectly passed information about you to a third party, where that party has no right to the information.
I would email SC and say you are making a formal complaint under the Data Protection Act and request their Data Controller investigates and provides you with a full report of how the error occurred and what steps they have taken to a) put it right, and b) to ensure it doesn't happen again.
The Information Commissioner's Office can, and does, fine companies for breaches of the DP Act. Serious offences can incur fines of up to £500,000. I'm not suggesting you complain to the ICO {yet} but you are entitled to be informed what went wrong with your data and why.DFW Nerd No. 1484 LBM 07/01/15 Debt was £95k  Now debt free and happy :j0 -

Completely agree January, if information has been released to anyone who had no right to it, then a complaint should be made. It's bad enough the carp Phoenixx is having to put up without them sending information to other folk.Debt -it's a fight that I'm winning, dealing with debt one day at a time.

Thanks for that, January2015. Much appreciated. How is the self managed going? I am going to hold my head high and hope all works out. :A
Hi Phoenix and CBC
Nothing much to add other than you both have my sympathy over this. I was invited to apply for a role with my professional organisation but when I read the info pack I was precluded from taking up the position because of my financial 'arrangements' described as formal,or,informal. I wasn't sure how they'd find out but wasn't prepared to risk it so came up with an excuse (personal circs) not to apply.
It's one of the reasons I always say a DMP isn't the right solution for everyone nor an easy option.
Hope you both find a way to get a successful resolution to this, the advice you've had already seems sensible.Debt -it's a fight that I'm winning, dealing with debt one day at a time.

Thanks Sazzie - at least I feel like I am not alone in thisI wish I had never gone along with the invitation to be a signatory. I feel a bit gullible to be honest. Do you have a recommendation about how I could keep an eye on these search agencies? Is it worth doing Noddle or Experian for example?
DMP since August 2011
DFD January 2018 hopefully sooner :j
Debt at start: £98769:eek:
Debt now: £24993:o
Paid back: £73776 :j
Taking it one day at a time:T0 -
Thanks, Sazzie, great advice as always:beer:
I think the reason I'm being asked now is because I've been treasurer for various groups before and obviously the current group would like someone with experience. Back in the day I had debts (when have I ever not had:o) but always made payments on time and had no arrears, defaults or such like. My honesty was never in doubt and for some strange reason I'm so much better at handling other people's money than my own:rotfl:
Nowadays the defaults, massive amount of debt still (though going down nicely:j) and the fact I'm on a DMP make me a non-starter. I just find it so hard to know what to say when I'm on the general committee anyway and everyone knows I have the time for the extra responsibility and they keep telling me I'd be ideal as treasurer as I know what's involved as I did it for this and that group before:eek:. Sometimes I feel an overwhelming urge to just blurt out that I can't do it because I'm on a DMP, a sort of standing up and acknowledging it like they do at Alcoholics Anonymous. I know I never will, though. Perish the thought:eek:
Thinking of you, phoenixx. Big hugs0
