What do people think of Otley for 30-somethings, houses, community and commuting to Leeds central? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks,

I think the thing here is that when you say 'areas' of Leeds you need to know that as Leeds is such a big city the area surrounding the centre become individual places in their own right and the have their own 'good' and 'not so good ' areas.
The district of Leeds reaches out for miles for example where I live where it takes 50 mins by bus on country roads or the same for places like Otley which although have an LS postcode are not really Leeds as such!
Overall you can pretty much tell the not so nice areas by the prices of the properties in that area but then even then there are places I'd prefer not to be in the more expensive areas and places I'd be perfectly happy in the cheaper ones!
If I were you and relocating I'd try to see which side you might prefer in terms of what's outside of Leeds I.e. Shopping centres, or connecting up with other towns such as Manchester or London or the east coast for weekend walks etc and then ring and make some viewings with an estate agent. Depending on how old you are, your hobbies, your social life and work commute they should be able to suggest ideas and then when you think you like a town in the surrounding area you can check which the good and not so good parts of that place?
Sorry if it seems vague but I could recommend probably over half the outlying towns and suburbs of Leeds in some way or another as being nice!0
