Exactly, Flyonthewall. In that case, maybe we should also only use simple words that everybody can understand.
Now that would be dumbing down.0 -

People make typos so it allows people to know you did mean DH rather than them thinking you meant husband when it should have been something else (e.g. He but missed the e or I but hit the wrong letter). If we made everything one letter it'd be really confusing.
I'm not sure I agree, but I take your point.
However, why DH rather than MH (my husband)? It would certainly avoid people posting ridiculous things like "my DH beat me up last night!".0 -
When I see MH, I think of Mental Health.0

You're asking me to explain the randomness of what the Internet chooses to use? lol.
I suppose it's just because it sounds nicer and I'm guessing the first person to type it didn't do so regarding a bad event/situation. Now most people use it just to mean husband and ignore the meaning of the D. Either that or instead of it meaning dear or darling they think of the D as standing for something bad.
Having said that, just because it's something bad doesn't mean that they don't still thinking of their husband as darling/dear. Even if asking for advice it's not always them wanting to get out of the situation, some just want someone to listen to them or other suggestions.0 -

From the wiki link above, it says that using internet slang makes it quicker for the writer, but it takes twice as long for the reader to understand. So arguments of time-saving are a bit redundant.
Surely that would only happen the first time you came across an abbreviation you didn't understand?0 -

I never thought that I'd used an abbreviation there. Oopsie...!:o

I don't recall saying I was offended, just reporting what I was told in a training session by a former employer. Continue using whatever abbreviations you like, but I thought it worth mentioning that it's not very welcoming to outsiders if you treat these forums like a private club and use language that is only understandable by existing members.
but the terms DH, OH, DD, DS are used on lots of forums, not just this one, so how is it not welcoming to outsiders when they start using forums? Its shorthand, its like text speak in text, you get used to the more common abbreviations, and pretty quickly really. If I don't understand the less common abbreviations, I'd ask.
And your other point about using abbreviations in the workplace? In my workplace, as in most others i'd have thought, there are abbreviations all over the place, theres no way any of us could retain all of them, so we just look them up, or ask someone. If anything, its more reassuring to new staff that us old-timers don't know them all, and we have to ask too.
