It's been around for years, abbreviations like DH, LOL etc come from the days of dial up when you could only write an email whilst connected and so typing in full cost money. Same with emoticons.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

I was taught that use of exclusive terminology that only members of the "in" club would understand is a form of bullying.Georgiegirl256 wrote: »:rotfl: Hardly! Why would anyone do that? I didn't know about it until I started using this forum, but it's a quick way to write something. It's no different to a lot of the short hand used on here IMO!
Imagine you had just started a new job and everybody was using abbreviations and terms that you didn't understand, and they didn't make any effort to explain what they meant?
Apart from that, it's just lazy. How much longer does it take to write "husband" rather than DH? And how much less time do other users have to spend scratching their head trying to figure out who you're talking about, whether it's OP, DD4, DS2 etc etc.
And as an aside, what is the world coming to when even papers like the Financial Times start using ridiculous phrases like Grexit and Brexit?0 -

Now you have made use Google to find out what those 2 words mean:rotfl:Treat other's how you like to be treated.

?
Id ask. Simple as that, if they were using abbreviations, then I'd assume it was something that they used a lot of in that particular job and if no one explained to me what they meant, I'd do like I'd do in any job where I didn't understand something, and I'd ask.
I've never heard of it being bullying and being a member of he "in" club before though.
It doesn't take that much longer to actually write out the words, but it does take longer, and if you're writing a long post with the same abbreviation in many times than it does cut down on time....besides, it's just a harmless thing, a lot of people do it, it never occurred to me that anyone would ever be offended by it.
Edit: Just had to google those two words too, and all I can say is, you're easily offended aren't you?0 -
It's worse when you've got people saying they suffer from some sort of disease/condition which they abbreviate and the rest of us are supposed to know what they mean.Make £2026 in 2026

I don't recall saying I was offended, just reporting what I was told in a training session by a former employer. Continue using whatever abbreviations you like, but I thought it worth mentioning that it's not very welcoming to outsiders if you treat these forums like a private club and use language that is only understandable by existing members.Georgiegirl256 wrote: »Id ask. I actually thought it did stand for that for months and months.
Rather DH than the genuinely awful "hubby".
I think the only abbreviation of husband I hate is "hubzy" or "hubsy".
For some reason (even odder as I'm CFbC) I detest any alternative form of "pregnant" though - prego, preggers, even pg!

Not a fan of all the abbreviations (easy to forget what some mean), but I get that they save time and got used to seeing DH and OH so don't think much of it now.I don't recall saying I was offended, just reporting what I was told in a training session by a former employer. Continue using whatever abbreviations you like, but I thought it worth mentioning that it's not very welcoming to outsiders if you treat these forums like a private club and use language that is only understandable by existing members.
It's not like it's just this forum. The entire Internet uses the same abbreviations. It takes two seconds to google it or ask if you don't know what it stands for, same as with everything.
Every forum has abbreviations. You go to a computer forum and they'll use OS (operating system) and things like that. Go to a gaming forum and you get COD (call of duty), AC (Assassin's Creed) and far more.
I'd also say it's not that uncommon in real life either. For example, many companies have their own systems which no doubt get abbreviated by staff who get fed up of saying/typing the whole name. If it's not explained you ask what it means.
Many words we use are actually abbreviations. GIF, for example, stands for Graphics Interchange Format. AM/PM, DVD, USB, TV etc. All abbreviations, but you don't think twice about using them. I bet you use abbreviations all the time without thinking about it. Why is it different just because it's on a forum?0 -

It's a quick way of typing something when your on a phone.
I use OH why cos it's quick doesn't make me feel superior
Is that why you type 'your' instead of 'you're? Because it's quicker?0
