One totally left field choice is the Skoda Roomster.

Cheap to buy and the 1.2 petrol is fairly decent on fuel.

    It is ugly though

a guy at work has a roomster, it's often referred to as the 'Mongulance'.....

lol at suggesting x5 when the OP is worried about the slightly higher tax bill already ;) its a nice car..IF you aren't the one who will pay for its servicing/fuel.

Also just because its a diesel it doesnt means that car will be economic, granted it will be more economic than the same model but petrol ,but still if you are taking a huge car and putting diesel in it ,it wont mean that it will be economical as such ;)

agreed on costing, my wife has one and i prefer it over my range rover, much cheaper and nicer to drive, considreing getting shot of my RR and getting one. Tax is not so noticable if you pay direct debit...

Thanks for that JonathanA. The reason we are looking at diesel as our own car, a Citroen Picasso 1.6 eats petrol, my mother swears by diesel and wouldn't go back to petrol and I think that's coloured our view.

Don't get me wrong, I love diesel cars, but for the age and price point you're buying at, you probably will have to factor in Dual Mass Flywheel replacement (which would also cover clutch and possibly starter motor too) and EGR valve.

If you could find a good condition, last of the old shape VW Sharan / Seat Alhambra / Ford Galaxy in budget with the 1.9TDi 130 engine, that would avoid some of those issues.

But if not, you could be looking at £1,500 in repairs, which starts to put the fuel cost advantages of a diesel into perspective.

People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

Thanks to all for replies. Still no further forward after an entire afternoon of looking at cars, sitting in cars, talking to people about cars. I would be more than happy to become a life long pedestrian at this point.

Volvo V70 diesel estate. Or, Zafira. Boot in Zafira is huge with the rear seat folded down.
