Which would you choose?

We are currently wanting to change cars to something that will fit large family (two adults, two kids, 3 dogs) and have a few cars lined up to go and see.

Husband and I know nowt about cars, daughters boyfriend thinks the Nissan x trail but I'll give a brief outline of all and would really appreciate any advice given.

'06 Nissan x trail, very low mileage for age, 40k but higher tax and insurance bracket.

The other cars are diesel estate Lagunas, peugot 308's or 3008's. They are more expensive than the x trail up front as they are newer '09 -'011, slightly higher mileage, 50 - 60k but are cheaper to tax etc.

As I say any advice much appreciated, this car would have to last a good while, average yearly mileage would be below 20k.

Nissans have a large connection with Renault including including using their engines. With the x-trail you need to be more specific about which engine. The Diesels do not have a good reputation as outlined here

You don't give a budget indication, and not knowing how large your 3 dogs are it is difficult to comment. However, I'd be looking for a larger estate car, or even an MPV. If you don't need 4x4 capability, I wouldn't look at that type of car. So my shortlist would probably include cars like a Ford Mondeo estate, VW Passat estate, Toyota Avensis estate etc

We're also a family with 2 kids and 2 medium sized dogs, I've got a Ford Galaxy which is brilliant as even with the family and the dogs in we can still get plenty of luggage in there when going on holiday. It's also relatively economical (45mpg) and the tax isn't horrendous.

    Tend to agree with this...

    Budget?
What are your dogs- terriers or St Bernards?
How old are kids? they short/tall?

My old man is a peugeot mechanic and he says the original 308 was a terrible car, as bad as the 307 was. 3008 has much better rivals in my opinion

To add to JonathanA - Honda CRV? Skoda Octavia? Skoda Yeti?

  • Budget is £5,500 max (in NI if that makes any difference to cost)one child big teenager, the other a fast growing boy with sports kits and a ruddy great trombone to cart around. Dogs are lab sized, holidays include all of the above squished in for road trips.

We have looked at passats and skodas but they are closer to the 06 age and usually quite high mileage, 90 to 100k in a lot of cases.

Blimey. I've seen one in a Ford dealership. It's a big bland box.
