I agree, the Ford Galaxy is a big, bland box - in fact not dissimilar to a van. But it is great at carrying people, dogs and luggage and isn't bad to drive. Fairly cheap to run (for the size of car) too.

For the OPs £5,500 budget, any large car is going to be of an age where it has the potential for problems, so choosing a well looked after and maintained car is going to be essential. But it will still be at an age where things start to wear out (just had a new clutch and DMF in my 6 year old Galaxy, but given its high mileage, that doesn't worry me).

OP - you will incur some maintenance costs, so you'll need to budget for them, and frankly whilst the MPG of the diesel will be better, you might be better at that age of car to buy a petrol!

Thanks for that JonathanA. The reason we are looking at diesel as our own car, a Citroen Picasso 1.6 eats petrol, my mother swears by diesel and wouldn't go back to petrol and I think that's coloured our view.

    Japanese over French ANY day!

Except modern Nissans are pretty much Renaults.

    Mondeo Estate.

I can see little fault in your logic especially as the budget will get a new shape (08 on)

Other possibilities are Octavia and Superb estate though the Superb may be difficult to find in budget with sensible mileage

I would buy in UK and ship back to NI.

One totally left field choice is the Skoda Roomster.

Cheap to buy and the 1.2 petrol is fairly decent on fuel.

    It is ugly though

The new Ford Galaxy is a very sexy looking car.
When we grow our family, thats the car I will be having.

Oh god I hope you're joking!

Haven't heard any bad things from big Nissan owners, recommending an Xtrail to the mother as her next car.

Volvo XC90s are pricier than all of these but excellent.

long gone are the days when nissan were japanese, now they are just as crap as french, actually they now ARE the same thing as renault.

Honda crv 2008+ year or Toyota avensis?
The skodas suggested here are just cheap cheap cheap cars, obviously they are miles ahead of peugeot/renault and vauxhall but still.

btw friend of mine has xtrail 2005 and its Terrible on fuel, I mean really terrible even tho its a diesel he gets only max 30mpg

also does it really matters that much whatever its 150quid/year tax or 200/year when you are buying a 5000 car? to save 50quid/year when you spend 5k on car just sounds stupid if that makes you change your views about cars.

lol at suggesting x5 when the OP is worried about the slightly higher tax bill already ;) its a nice car..IF you aren't the one who will pay for its servicing/fuel.

Also just because its a diesel it doesnt means that car will be economic, granted it will be more economic than the same model but petrol ,but still if you are taking a huge car and putting diesel in it ,it wont mean that it will be economical as such ;)
