market rents budget

A household with two people each earning £20k has an after-tax income of about £2,800/month. How much is your rent currently?
A random tenancy rent calculator suggests that a rent of about £1350/month - less than half that monthly income - is perfectly affordable and appropriate on that kind of household income. A quick look on RightMove finds a good choice of very nice two-bed properties for that money - or less - in a random London suburban borough.
You say "If this was mortgage"... but you forget one detail - that what's happening here is that the subsidy the taxpayer gives towards your rent is being removed. If rents are so unfair and excessive, then why don't you buy somewhere?
Sounds to me that you're miffed at the removal of the umbrella sheltering you from reality in a large city with an imbalance between residential property supply and demand.
This is exactly the point. Those who earn not insignificant salaries and receive subsidy to help them pay their rent are now experiencing the harsh realities of life. Welcome to the real world where rents are, well, the market rate.
If the OP doesn't like the policy they should move to somewhere more affordable - like everyone else who isn't getting a rental subsidy.0 -
If you look at this from a stoic point of view you're still much better off than those in the private rented sector.
Secure tenancy.
No Sword of Damocles (Section 21) hanging above your head.
No letting agency fees.
Able to decorate your own home without someone else's permission.
Able to have a pet.
Many reasons to be cheerful.

Would you care if this policy wasn't going to affect you?
I do care about housing in the UK, I'm just pointing out that you have it better than a lot of others. You'd be ecstatic paying full market rent with a secure tenancy if the alternative was full market rent with security no longer than 12 months and annual renewal fees at a couple of hundred a whip.0 -
Shame thats as far as you can see0

BTW, if you want to compare with Germany, consider that the population density of England is about twice that of Germany.
