  • Sorry if this is a FAQ but I have been dithering over Revolut for ages.

There are plenty of cards you can just load up with money then spend it abroad. Why is this better?

Bearing in mind I don't know anyone else with Revolut so not useful that you can transfer money to friends. Also I don't really go outside the Eurozone; all I want is some sort of card I can pay for things in Spain without the massive charges I get with UK debit card.

In comparison with other prepaid cards it is by far the best value, most versatile and convenient to use. For your purpose you could instead/also use Metrobank debit card or a travel credit card such as Halifax Clarity.

  • I successfully used the Revolut card to withdraw local currency (Chinese Yuan) from ATM's in China without any problem and also used it for an in-store purchase in Russia.

I don't have it as my main card (use Halifax Clarity credit card and also have a FairFX card as well) but so far it has worked well and the exchange rate was good. I also have a Travelex Supercard but haven't used that yet.

I really like that you can see quickly on the app that a transaction has taken place and the rate.
  • A word of warning it takes hours for customer service to get back to you via the app then about half an hour every time a message is sent in reply. Tried calling the emergency line for over 2 hours it just rings and then cuts off and unable to leave a message. As for privacy an acquaintance I haven't spoke to in over 2 years contacted me and asked what I thought of Revolut, I asked how they knew I was using it and they said I came up in their contact list. I checked my contact list which I hadn't given the app permission to access up until then and there were random people, old bosses and people I haven't been in contact with for over 10 years. Surely nobody should be able to see you unless you authorise each individual. I'm thinking of transferring my cash back to my bank and closing it down and using a more private card. Apparently anyone who has your phone number can join up and see what your using.

You gave permission to access the list of contacts on your phone when you installed the app, the same as with various other apps. If you consider secrecy about your use of Revolut more important than the convenience of selecting friends or family for instant transfers then you may indeed need to stop using it. If this was the concern you were trying to contact the in-app support about, they probably had to prioritise other peoples' issues.

however I used the chat/support line a couple of times and their reply was almost instant

My revolut card was declined on a few occasions on my recent holiday and their cs staff trotted out a very long list of excuses why it wasn't their fault.

    Including:
    - the payment terminal was probably old and not compliant with some standard. And yet it had a symbol for contact payment, so that wasn't true
    - there might have been a connection error, which was also bs
    - the atm machine I used my card in was not suitable, also a load of bs
    etc

The cs staff I dealt with were incredibly surly and told me incorrect information but insisted nothing was their fault.

I spent an inordinate amount of my holiday time back and forth with their cs staff trying to get solutions.

It was stressful and unpleasant dealing with this company. They'd rather spend £40 (my ballpark estimate) of man-hours giving excuses and being belligerent then refund £1, so I won't be dealing with them again.

If I didn't have enough cash with me, if I'd put a lot more money on this card, my holiday would have been absolutely ruined.

And if anyone from their company is reading this, don't contact me to "look into it". I dealt with your cs staff and they had so much of my time on holiday and did nothing except everything listed above, don't bother to make any more excuses.

You are just a woeful company with cs staff who are taught to talk down to and be belligerent to customers, who would rather waste everyone's time than fix anything or admit they made mistakes.

I can imagine that they are glad to be rid of you and your own 'bs'. Any card can fail occasionally. A refund for what?

Get several back up cards just in case, never rely on 1 card on holiday. My revolut was declined on a few occasions, but had my trusty Halifax Clarity card to hand.
