I'm not sure how far Bangor is from you Rhos....but part of me wonders that the whole uni experience is one that young adults take away from home rather than going somewhere local.
We have an excellent uni very close to us that does the exact course DS1 wants next year, but he doesnt want to live at home or indeed within a few mile radius of us...and I can understand that....so he's hopefully results willing going to go 4 hours away to an equally good uni,the difference being its not on the doorstep.
Aside from the social side of uni life...it is a valuable lesson in growing and developing and one that many young people benefit from. Its a chance for independence and hopefully to learn life skills that you just dont get when you still live at home.

I never went to uni,nor wanted to but I actually think that in scrapping funding and making it difficult for making a choice based on wheres convenient rather than wheres best to study opens up a whole new debate of families supporting and funding their kids much later into life and denying them the experience of "flying the nest"
In your sons case though yes he wont be going to uni for a few years but I guess its good that he will have a bit of an insight into the workings of one, even if it isnt where he might eventually study....

Agree with you, but there is no scrapping of funding - it is all going to be a loan. Interestingly it doesn't seem to have been picked up on that housing benefit will be denied to anyone until they are 21. So 18 year olds who want to move out on their own will only be able to do so if they can afford to rent for themselves. Otherwise it will be expected that they remain with their family. I hope they put something in place for those that cannot live with their families. DS2 says at uni there are quite a few students who don't have a nest that it is easy to return to at holiday time.

    Hi xxx
Very store specific I expect but in Aldis this morning they had lots of postage items, padded envelopes and cardboard box type ones too all priced at 20p.
They also had wooden/ceramic soap and tumbler things which looked quite nice at the same price.
The Greens quick set twin pack jellies too, they were 5p, I got some of those, they're great for making strawberry flans, just have to hope my strawberries ripen soon!
mmm..... these strawberries make my breath happy mum ds

On a strand of pure silver, I'll welcome each day

    Hi FC..:hello:

Unfortunately we are not all as awesome as you seem to be..:o

I am here to post about glitches and find out about them from other like minded people. After all, that was the main reason the Elite thread was started wasn't it?

I do not go to threads about saving the world or raising a million pounds for charity or being superman or superwoman as even though they are admirable things to do or aspire to, they don't really interest me. However I am interested in shopping tips and glitches that save me and my family cash that we can then go on to use on other things.

So, I think it is good every so often to talk about how we might be able to help some of the worst off in society, even in a small way. If we all do a little bit here and there, no matter how small, it will definitely help someone out.

So, FC, rather than take the risk again in future of making yourself unpopular here, how about you don't snipe at the elite members and you don't try to big yourself up at every opportunity and you do go on to the mse Superheroes thread and discuss your amazing exploits with similarly minded superhumans like yourself..:D

Totally agree with you on helping others but it seems that the Tories are on a mission to convince the public that everyone that claims in work our out of work are scrounges. Yes you will get that in some cases but to brand everyone with the same brush is not nice and it's not a good way to split the public. At the same time I agree with make company's pay a proper wage. But people who work and get tax credits will suffer but if that's what people like then so be it but very sad. On another note it's nice to see them looking at fox hunting... Personally I would have thought that would be the last thing. Government would be concerned about.

At last I have crisps. I found a measly five grab bags at 20p each in B&M today, so in a rash moment I gambled a pound and bought them all. Just my luck they would be the 5 out of 6 that aren't winners but no, the first one delivered the goods :D
:j to be part of the crisp gang.

    just read this..

Tesco is scrapping its Fuel Save scheme, which offers customers up to 20p off the price of a litre of petrol, after just 16 months.

While the website still proclaims 'Keep on saving up to 20p a litre with Clubcard Fuel Save', a new addition has appeared warning customers that the offer will end on August 31.

Last summer, the then chief executive Philip Clarke said Fuel Save 'will be a key point of difference in building long-term customer loyalty.'

Now, though, Tesco plans to stop issuing vouchers at the end of next month, and customers will need to trade them in by September 30.

Oh well, I've started at T recently (due to them being much nearer) and glad I didn't get drawn into it and expect anything extra, still less account for the Fuelspend "discount" in my shopping bills:eek:, as I would never have built up enough to redeem. Fortunately however I'm still pretending to be away for much longer from them!

I suppose, we're now to assume, that they'll be no difference at all between them anymore and they don't care about customer loyalty, long-term or otherwise:rotfl:. However, it would not be fair to them as that would be trying to hold them to a statement made by a previous regime. Not fair - why not, Savvy, why not?:D

It was good near the beginning, when all that cat food and the bowl was available.:D:D:rotfl: (As long as you read [red] the fine print very carefully indeed and didn't get tripped up on it:(.)

Agree that part of growing up is moving away from home, particularly if you are a mum like me who does step in and sort problems - often before the offspring are aware.

The way I read the budget is that lower income families offspring had some of the loan replaced by grant on a £1 for £1 basis, now it will all be loan. So the amount available as a student will be the same. DS2 tells me that those from the poorest families also get help direct from the universities. He says that the ones that really struggle are the ones where the parents have enough income to effect the loan, but are find things tight, so these students don't get help from the uni and don't get extra help from parents.

I must admit I don't really know the ins and outs from 2012 onwards when things changed considerably so sorry if I spouted rubbish there. That was how I had understood it. :o

Whatever the rules they should all be the same for everyone regarding loans. Just because a family is deemed to have enough income to help doesn't necessarily mean they are in the position to with their outgoings, whatever life threw them previously they may not have been able to save and that should not mean the students should have to struggle. I'm thinking here ill health of parents, redundancy, negative equity from 90s, all things out of people's control which may mean they do not have the same disposable income as others on the same wage.

I think I am getting out of my depth here so not going to say anymore.
