    ah, it appears not

You'll probably have to use something like postimage.org to upload your own photo.

    It's free, and quite easy.

Depends on the breed and how experienced you are as an owner/breeder. My friend is very good, she can sex them on day of hatch by looking at the feather formation. For me it can take till they are 4 or 5 weeks old

Suki is right it depends on the breed and how experienced you are.

Some can sex them at a day old if they are experienced like Suki's friend. Some are not so good at that job.

As a rule you can tell by the feather formation as females have rounded off feathers whereas the males have sharp pointed feathers. One way to check for this is to slip a swipe card like a credit card under some of their wing feathers as this will then show the shape of the feathers. Could always do this with paper but I suppose it could be sharp whereas a credit card or similar is rounded off on the edges.

Another way is when they are born the females often have tiny slightly visible wing feathers whereas males don't. This is not the easiest way to sex them though but it can be done.

Also as a rule 60% will be male and the other 40% will be female.

    HTH

My girls are not looking too happy today :0(

The wind and rain has been going in all directions here especially last night so now the coop floor is wet. Not everywhere just around the sides and about 3ft in. Just doesn't dry out in this weather and makes the coop feel damp. When we do get the sun it is blocked from the coop in the mornings because of next doors huge ugly non native trees. We are south facing so they do get the sun, when it is out, on the south side. The side at the west is blocked by next doors huge hedge although you can see through it a bit.

Can not put the lights on in there because they blew the electrics in the house the other day. Must have got some damp wires somewhere but where we have no idea at the moment so can't chance putting the lights back on until it has been thoroughly looked at.

Can not wait to get a permanent roof on their coop as it will be so much easier if we have another ban on letting them out. Can't start that job until this ban is lifted so we can let them all out and get on with the job. Can't install a new roof with them in there it just would not be fair on them.

Been asked if we would take in another 6 hens which we would gladly do. But it is so frustrating as we can not move them at the moment. Also wouldn't be fair to introduce 6 new hens in to the coop with them all shut in together. Just hope the couple that want them rehomed will wait till the ban is lifted.

It's not all doom and gloom here as we made the hens a swing in the week. Will need to sit up there again today and try and encourage them to perch on it. So far they have just looked at it and walked off :D

How is everyone else and their hens getting on? All ok I hope.

    Chat soon :)
