Hog roast

Options
Im holding a BIG party - over 150 guests for a leaving 'do' for my DD who is going off to boarding school in September and as she is going to miss her birthday I decided that she could have a big party as a send off. There will mostly be teenagers attending  as well as over 40 adults made up of family and friends. For the food I thought that a hog roast would be a good idea so that everybody can help themselves and it would be a bit different from the usual sandwiches and sausage rolls :)
We have bought a BIG piece of rolled pork leg ( over 9kg ) some stuffing and some apple sauce. I had the idea that we could shread the pork and put it into large tins with stuffing all around with tongs for the guests to help themselves to fill bread rolls with.
My question is though, how do I cook the meat so that it turns out like a hog roast that can be shredded  I want the meat to turn out nice and not too tough and chewy :o
I would be grateful for any advice / tips on cooking pork.
I am also going to have some salad available for the guests and various cakes and gateaux for desserts.
Thanks for your help - I dont know what I did before MSE :rotfl:

I don't mean to be a party pooper, but will 9kg of pork be enough for 150 people? I would of thought you'd need a fair bit more than that.

blooming thing lost my post again grrrr

anyway did some research on google and an estimate is 40lb cooked meat with salads etc to go with it. That equates to 18kg cooked weight. I'd say if 100 people ate you're looking at buying another 2 of them leg things by the time they are cooked you might be about right... then again... teenagers... you never know how many will turn up... :)

Whenever I've been to a party with a hog roast, it's been extremely popular, no matter what the age group.

I know the advice I'm about to give you isn't exactly money saving, but if it were me holding a party for 150 people, I'd be hiring in the professional hog roast people to take care of things. You'll have enough on your plate making sure 100+ teenagers are behaving themselves!

LOL thanks so much for your replies. I must admit I was beginning to regret offering a party the minute that I booked it but there will be no alcohol and a doorman with a list of the RSVP's so 'if your names not down your not coming in' as they say ;)
OK then so far the consensus (sp?) seems to be that we have no where near enough meat so will rectify that tomorrow. My Mum has offered to pay for the food :p so I will break the news to her tomorrow that we will need another 2 'joints'. I have 2 helpers for the food table and others will be around on the dance floor to keep an eye on things.
I just want it to be a nice party for my DD and for everybody to have a nice time without me running around like a lunatic :rotfl:

Wow I can see the sense in wanting to do a hog roast yourself - we have them hired in at work and they charge something ridiculous like £7.95 per head, and thats just for what is basically a pork roll!

Re how much you need - I would ring a hog roast company making enquiries about how much is required etc. and then base your amount on that.

Dont know about the teenagers you know but the ones round here all have hollow legs - no way could I feed 150.

    Good luck
Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!

    OOPs...

If you cook pork slowly you should have moist, tender pork, not chewy...so I would say that you need around an hour a kilo at 130c....heat oven to max and when you put in pork reduce to your chosen temp. Good luck with your project....you are a brave woman!
