    I've been Money Tipped!
I started off with a 5k limit on Barclay card, within a year they had increased it to £13k where it has remained. I actually changed my settings to prevent automatic limit increases.

When I applied for the Tesco CC in February this year, they offered £7900 straightaway, the highest initial offer I have ever been offered as a new customer.

from memory I think I have always been asked the amount of credit limit I would like when applying, or if it was a balance transfer card, asked the amount of the transfer. So I have always kept it low, its possible if I asked for higher, I could get higher.

I recently took out my first C/Card with Santander, after being rejected by Lloyds (my own bank, who offered me the card "pre-approved") i was initially offered a limit of £5k, but i asked them to lower it, the lady claimed she can drop it to £2k but no lower (no idea how true this is, i did my app over the phone)

    MBNA are anecdotally quite generous.

+1 for MBNA but not necessarily all that generous. In my own experience falling short on a full 6 years spotless credit history but nothing otherwise negative I got the MBNA Low Rate Card at an increased APR of 11.9% with a relatively low limit although reasonable of £800.

So if my experience MBNA will take a chance but they won't stick out their neck too far and they want the odds stacked in their favour. But they do a compulsory soft credit search and quotation which can be accepted or refused so not a lot to lose in applying.

but i have a barcaylcard that i have tried to cancel several times

started with a £300 limit :o now have £5000 and they gave me 12mths 0% on transfers and buying stuff,

i am just about to cancel again, but just got accepted for a Virgin card with 0% for 24 months! and think barcalycard are now offering 36 mths 0% so will see what they do this time

Natwest gave me an initial limit of £11,500. It's the only card I have and I don't even know the pin number. I got it before purchasing two business class flights to Australia, for the purpose of the guarantees. I have it set to be paid off by dd each month, but most months there's a zero balance anyway. I only use it for on line purchasing.

Incidentally, what limit did Virgin give you?

Don't all credit companies base your credit limit on your income as well as credit utilisation elsewhere ( as well as many other factors of course)?

Would it not make more sense to say what your credit limit is as a % of your income, do give a better indication? (or just state your income?)..
I guess sharing your income is "not the done thing" in the UK, but the person above saying they got a 20k limit with MBNA might well earn over 100k, and therefore not really be a big limit compared to income..

    Just a thought..

my experience is I have a Barclaycard that was initially around £4k limit (I was earning a bit of 30k at the time application), which eventually crept up to over 10k.. I opted to lower the credit limit once I cleared the balance, so it's now around 6k.

I recently applied for the Santander 123 Card and my limit is around 6k, on a 45k income.

well if they do then prob sounds about right for what you have, i earn around £52k so sounds about right,

but how do they know how much you earn, i mean your credit check doesnt reveal this does it ?? so they can only take your word for it and go on your current credit etc,
