I once had a move (around 5 years ago) from a 3rd floor to a 6th floor flat. It was only round the corner. We knew the lift to the first flat was broken, and we'd warned them of that, and booked plenty of time for the stairs. We had a fair bit of furniture and appliances. I felt pretty guilty about it (I'd always moved by myself before but this would have been beyond me).
The true nightmare began when we got to the new flat (6th floor, remember) and found that the lift was inexplicably broken. We tried another lift on the other side of the building, bit of a walk but better than hauling up 6 flights. Then that broke, too - with a bunch of our stuff stuck inside for good measure.
Then, it started to rain. The floor outside was very slippery so you had to walk carefully.
I still to this day cannot understand how those three blokes did it, with only an extra couple of hours. I managed some duvets up the 6 flights just once and I was done for - didn't attempt it again!! We paid them an extra £60 plus the extra hours, because I literally don't know what I would have done without them. Now the amount seems puny but we were hard up at the time.0 -
I don't have a problem with this but I'm surprised that it's a thought before the job's even done.
I doubt they price the job hoping it gets made up to a reasonable amount with tips!
It's their job, it may seem like mission impossible to most but they have their ways!0 -
We paid nearly £1500, to move 30 miles, mind you it was 2 lorries and about 6 of them. Did offer cups of tea, but they didn't want to stop. I didn't tip now I feel gulity and tight.0

The firm I used only sent two guys for a whole house they worked their nuts off for two days I gave them £40 on the first day so they could get some dinner that night and £40 the next day and a took them for a breakfast. Remember these guys earn a pittance as do I working for a supermarket but I made their day and they could not have been more helpful.
ALWAYS REWARD HARD WORK!0 -
When we moved it was 'the boss' who observed and directed the packing of the van, but 3 of 'his boys' who drive & unpacked at the end. We gave them £20 each to grab something to eat on the way home - they did a great job, and no doubt earn a pittance for what is very manual labour with a lot of responsibility!0
