A read of the refer-a-friend FAQs on their website perhaps? Specifically FAQ 11...

Just to be extra clear on this - the wife and I have a joint FlexPlus, plus a couple of sole current accounts elsewhere doing nothing just now. Is that potentially £400 of switch money we could applying for?

Might just be me but I don't really understand FAQ 11 on their site. It mentions switching the co-account holders other account into their existing joint account...i think.

My understanding of it is that my wife could recommend me to switch my other account into the existing joint one, earning us £100 each. I could then do the same with her, earning another £100 each. It seems a bit strange to me, hence my request for clarification, even though that does appear (to me) to be what the FAQ is referring to.

    Hi

I've been referred by a friend and he/she has forwarded an email from Nationwide to me, which gives some details of the process

However, there is no link within the email to a webpage on which to make the application, and of course I haven't received anything directly from N/W

Do I simply apply on the N/W site and they'll marry up all the details to ensure we both get our incentives?

I had thought there would be a special link which would track, etc to ensure this

Thanks for advice from those who've done it!

Hi, There will be no links. Nationwide will have your details so they should be able to match it against your account application.

    http://www.nationwide.co.uk/products/current-accounts/landing-page/recommend-a-friend

    It says:-
If you're a Nationwide Current account holder, you can recommend your friends and family.
You give us a few details about you and about your friend by the end of July 2015.
We'll email you with more information about the offer which you can forward to your friend.
Your friend can apply online, or they can go to a branch or call us on 0800 30 20 10

I have done recommendation previously and they managed to match the details without any problems and incentive was paid into the account.

    Regards

I'm surprised by the mention in their FAQs that the £100 is income and should be reported to HMRC. I thought it was established that these incentives weren't taxable?

Probably they say that because it is possible to repeatedly benefit as a referrer - but not as a referree since they can't 'dictate' the process from which they benefit. In other words, tax implication arise once you make a habit of doing something which generates you an 'income'. The halifax 'reward' payments are repeated (and thus are taxable) as are the new Barclays version, whereas a one-off can't be relied on.

I'm in the same position - my partner and I have a joint account and both have sole accounts elsewhere - would be nice to trouser £400 for switching these if the rules allow it.
Has anyone done this/got further clarification?

I've done the referral for each of us and received the emails, but I'm waiting on a couple of DDs being set up on the old accounts before I can go any further. They should be active by the 20th.

I assume we'll need to call them to make the switch though; I haven't noticed any way of switching online (although I'll admit I've not looked too closely).

Still no idea if it'll actually work or not, but can but try...
  • Yes, I'm just waiting for my last DD to be set up on one account and then I will give it a go.

It looks like you can switch online - I just logged into my Flexaccount and one of the options on the left-hand side was a 'Switch' option.
You need to select the relevant account from the overall accounts page to see these options.
