MSE News: Plusnet to hike home phone and broadband prices
Comments
-
I have received an email from Plusnet informing me of line rental price increases and offering me the option of cancelling my phone contract without charging cancellation fees.
I also have my broadband with Plusnet. As I am mid contract for both, will I have to pay cancellation fees for broadband or can I migrate without any charges ?
Thanks for any advice.
Terms and Conditions
Unlimited broadband at half price. That’s £4.99 a month for 12 months. Normally £9.99 a month. Line rental required – 12 month contract, low cost areas only.
Available to existing Plusnet customers in low cost areas who sign up to a new 12 month contract and take Plusnet Unlimited broadband (with Plusnet home phone package).
Plusnet homephone packages are from £15.95 a month (including line rental and UK* weekend calls). If you live in a low cost area and take Plusnet line rental at £15.95 a month you pay £4.99 a month for 12 months, then £9.99 a month from month 13.
If you need a new phone line installing at your property, there is a £49.99 installation charge. *UK means 01, 02, 03, 0845 & 0870 numbers. Exclusions apply. Payment by Direct Debit required. £5.99 charge for router delivery, should you choose one.
This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer and will replace any discounts you currently have remaining on your account. You will enter into a new 12 month contract when you accept the offer.
In the confirmation email it says:
Your new monthly subscription will be £20.94 for the next 12 months.
Following this your monthly subscription will be £25.94
Please note: This does not include the cost of any Add-Ons, call costs or call features.
Err...where does it say we can raise phone rental in that time? Pfffff.0 -
About time the regulator got their finger out and did something in the interest of the consumer for once instead of their own interests and big fat salaries and pensions.0

can someone tell me what is the point of being able to leave a phone company penalty free, when all the phone companies are increasing their prices around the same time and there is virtually no difference in the pricing? instead of all the waste of time exercises Ofcom etc go about, they never even try to do anything about landline costs! line rental with plusnet, just as with the other providers, has gone up and up and up, but for what? their hasn't been anything drastic done to improve land line calls or connections or clarity. it's just an excuse to make more profit! regardless of what they say, there is virtually no difference between the providers and wont be while they are allowed to monopolize on the service. we pay for 'improvements' to be made, then pay to use the improvement we just payed for! that's good, isn't it!!
the telecoms industries need to be seriously looked at as far as pricing is concerned because, like the energy companies, they are ripping people oss left, right and centre!!0 -
Yes, noticed this as well. Last year the LRS change was 87 days before my LRS expiry, so I renewed at 2013 rate. This year it is well over the 90 days...wongawonga wrote: »Have you noticed how they have changed the normally yearly increase and keep bringing increase dates forward to get more revenue.

Yes, if you renew before the rise, you can indeed get the old price (but still keep the same renewal date), which is worth doing with inflation as low as it is. But (and I think this is what GazHol was referring to) they only let you do so up to about 3 months before your renewal, so I think that is part of the reason they keep moving the date of the rise forward, so that existing customers (about whom all companies seem to care little) can no longer take advantage of this.
Note that if you ask them if you can beat the rise by paying early, the first reply you get that says yes may not mention the three month maximum, but when you 'phone to do so (and you have to 'phone, AFAICS - you certainly can't do it by ticket), then - after the 30 minutes of noise wait - they'll tell you you can't. (So another 30 minutes wait in a few weeks' time.)0 -
i can tell you, as it happened to me last year, you cannot beat the price increase if you try to renew more than 30 days in advance. so if the increase is 5 weeks away, you cant do it more than 30 days ahead. if your term is up after the thirty days, but before the price increase, you cant.
another thing to watch out for, as happened to me, is if you want to pay line rental for a year but are with a different supplier.
i mistakenly ticked a box to put my line rental over to BT. i didn't even know i had done so until about 4 days later when i had a 'Thankyou' letter fron BT. i immediately got on the hone to try to get it stopped but i was refused. i treied with who i wanted to still be with and i couldn't. as soon as you tick that 'swap me to BT' box, iy is transferred immediately, no cooling off period, nothing! and ofcom nor the other regulator or whatever didn't give a toss!0 -

How long before they put line rental up another quid to be level with BT?
Saving £18 a year on line rental is good, until other prices of your package increase, meaning you can leave penalty free but loss the outstanding amount paid for line rental.
Just keep bouncing from provider to provider, getting cashback deals & freebies, when they put the prices up enough to give you a "get out free" card, get out and bounce to another provider to get new customer rates0 -

You can also stay where you are on a retention deal. Generally I've managed to get a retention deal much better than I was on before a price increase - certainly been true for Sky and Plusnet.0 -

What if new customer deals beat the retention deal once cashback & other 'freebies' are taken into account (i.e. £X gift vouchers)?0
