MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Fernando pay for Lewis' service?

No he shouldn't but he should pay something each week towards petrol.Back in the Midlands! :j0

Last year I used to give a guy from work a lift back home on the odd occasion, and I didn't charge anything as a one off, but he then wanted a lift every day. The journey doesn't take me out my way that much, but is rather a different route home. Eventually we came to the agreement that he paid a quid a day.
The guy who I gave a lift to doesn't drive, and felt that the petrol didn't cost as much as a quid, so I did remind him that petrol isn't the only cost to running a car, and anything above the petrol cost goes towards tax, insurance, servicing, and buying my next car.
Therefore I already had that angle covered.0 -
Fernando shouldn't be expected to pay towards the maintenance of the car, but he should be contributing in some form - petrol money etc. It's unfair and takes advantage of someone's goodwill to expect a lift "free of charge" all the time0

I guess it depends on how they got into the arrangement to start with.
I agree with others that Lewis would have the costs to pay regardless if he drives to work so it's unfair to look to Fernando to cover those costs, but the decent thing for Fernando to do would be to offer Lewis something reasonable every week (say petrol money) in return for the lift.
Lewis might have to watch out that in accepting money for a regular lift he might invalidate his insurance, and I'm not sure if there is a tax implication too - but that's just a nagging whisper at the back of my brain....
Ps Go go go Fernando! All things change in a dynamic environment. Your effort to remain what you are is what limits you...0 -
Since Fernado should as a matter of common courtesy already be contributing to his daily journey I dont think this dilemma need arise in the future.
Right now it could be suggested he help with these repair costs and Lewis start to immediately ask for a weekly sum to cover future maintenance costs.0 -
Fernando should buy his own car. He should then park outside Lewis' driveway and make him late for work every morning. 12 seconds a day should be enough.
That will teach him.0 -
Fernando should already be giving Lewis the cost of his hour long journey and be pleased to do so in consideration of having a much more comfortable journey with Lewis in a third of the time. So the question of contributing to repairs does not arise.0

Lewis and Fernando should have come to an payment arrangement before they started, it is unfair to expect Fernando to make money out of Lewis kindness.
A retrospective payment of £150 is very reasonable, less than 50p a day and way less then the saving made over the year. I haven't used a bus for while, as unless you work in town they are of no use whatsoever , but the tickets were way more than a mere 50p especially for an hour journey.
If they can't come up with a happy agreement Lewis should dump Fernando and register on a car share site, which explains legal and morale issues that can arise (the site used by my employer is http://www.234car.com/ ), and wave at Fernando as he passes him at the bus stop in the rain with a full car.0 -
Before I got my car and when I was at my old job an ex friend used to give me a lift to work as we worked at the same place, and lived near each other. She didn't however always give me a lift back as she often worked late and I didn't, but i paid her £35 a month petrol money.I have since found out that this covered all her petrol costs for the month:eek:
Therefore if Fernando is paying petrol money I don't think he should be contributing to the service, if not he needs to give something every week, not just as a one off:p"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Fernando should be paying for the cost of fuel and that's it. The car doesn't belong to him so why should he pay for repairs?! If Lewis isn't happy then he should stop giving him a lift. Imagine if Lewis went to sell the car and Fernando wanted half the profits?! I don't think Lewis would be too happy when the shoe's on the other foot :rotfl:0
