MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Fernando pay for Lewis' service?

  • He should not be paying anything towards maintenance because he should have been paying a weekly cost towards the journeys anyway which would have included maintenance costs.
  • Fernando should pay for a set of tyres for Lewis's car. When they fall out because Fernando eats his breakfast in the car on the way to work, Fernando should take his tyres with him when they part company. :rotfl:

Fernando should ave offered to pay petrol money or something else at the start. If he hasn't then yes, he should offer some contribution toward the runnign cost of the car.

The way I se eit is Fernando should offer to pay what he would otherwise pay for the bus. He benefits froma quicker and more comfortable ride so he's still on the up. If Lewis weren't picking Fernando up he would be much more flexible (and possibly less stressed at times) and so it is costing LEwis to do Fernando this favour, both financially (more weight = more petrol) and psychologically.
I love it when a plan comes together :rotfl:
  • If Fernando is paying petrol money or other gesture for each lift then it would be unreasonable to ask for money come MOT time.

If he has been paying nothing then, Lewis should expect some type of contribution:beer:

  • Here's this week's hypothetical situation for you to cogitate on:
Should Fernando pay for Lewis' service?

Lewis gives his colleague Fernando a lift to work most days of the year, as otherwise Fernando would have to get an hour-long bus journey instead of the 20 minute car ride. Lewis rarely uses his car outside work, and come MOT time, there are a number of maintenance costs; new tyres, new brake pads and an oil change, totaling £300. As Fernando is in the car during most of its use, Lewis thinks he should shoulder half of the cost, but Fernando thinks as it's Lewis’s car, it’s his cost.

No. Lewis is using his car to travel to work anyway, so all maintenance costs are his. Fernando should offer something towards petrol, though, as he's saving time and money on his public transport costs. But no, Lewis's car is Lewis's car.

I think Lewis needs to change his garage!! - thats a lot of repairs/costs for not much driving.. only joking..

    Lewis should pay for it..
  • I think that it would probably cost Fernando a lot more than £150 a year in bus fares so it is only fair that he contributes towards Lewis' car expenses.

I would be amazed, (and would question Fernando's values), if he hadn't both offered to make a contribution to the petrol costs and insisted on Lewis accepting them.

However, if this isn't the case, I feel that Lewis should have a conversation with Fernando about making a contribution towards the petrol and running costs of the car. A fair amount per journey should then be agreed.

I don't think Fernando should shoulder half of all the running costs. He doesn't have equal access to, or use of the car - he only gets a lift on a set journey on workdays. I am sure it would work out much cheaper than the bus fares for him (aswell a being more comfortable and a lot quicker). I am also sure that Lewis would feel less 'used' if Fernando showed some appreciation of the costs, effort and generosity of Lewis by acting as Fernando's chauffeur.

    In short:
    Fernando, have some dignity!
    Lewis, grow some balls!

    Quick note.

A couple of comments abovehave noted that 'a Money Saving Expert' should've thought of this... there's no MSE in the above; think of the names "Lewis" and "Fernando" and when they go together and remember this is about Cars and Driving ;)
