It won't necessarily replace Sky, mainly because Sky tends to have a lot more current/recent content, but I've got it as part of my Prime delivery (and went as far as to get a couple of Fire TV boxes), and it's getting a good amount of use for slightly older TV series.

I have it. It gets a reasonable amount of use. There's quite an eclectic selection of movies on there. The TV box sets are lacking a bit but its one of those things that you can always find *something* to watch.

It wouldn't replace Sky if you were looking for newer releases but there's a few non-HBO shows that have appeared on Amazon a few months after they finished a run on Sky. You can also rent/buy some HBO shows as an extra if you wish. If you're not bothered about seeing everything first, then it's a pretty decent offering. My only real complaint is the UI on some devices (Xbox and Samsung smart TV) is a bit of a pest to navigate.

I've used it on the free trial for two months - one month on my account and one month on the OH's. ;)
Wouldn't pay for it, the selection of movies is pretty dire, think of a movie you've seen and enjoyed - it almost certainly won't be there IME. We found a few TV "seasons" we enjoyed. Go for the free trial. As soon as you register for it, cancel it. The trial still runs for the 30 day period.

  • Hello all,

Just want some advice on which TV / Dongle to get. I currently use my laptop to stream netflix / amazon prime and Sky go to my TV. However my laptop is on its last legs and I don't plan on replacing it as I only use it for streaming.

I want to replace it with a streaming TV device like Amazon tv but I'm not sure what to look for!! I use Amazon prime Video and Netflix plus Sky go and would like to be able to have all available.

Is this possible and which device would be best? I'm not interested in using the device for games or anything just watching TV/Films.

    thanks

The Amazon Fire will obviously meet the need with regards to Amazon Prime and Netflix. There are no streaming devices that support Sky Go, for that you need a PC/laptop or iPhone/iPad/Android.

I have an ipad, but its not great for more than one person watching at a time. I have tried to google the Sky go thing and can't work out why it's not available!

To officially have Sky Go, you need a Sky tv subscription, so unless using a tv which is not the main Sky taker in the house, there should be no need to stream Sky, as it shows on that tv, via the dish.

I have a Sky subscription but that is hooked up to my TV downstairs along with my Xbox that I can stream netflix et al.

The issue is I wanted to be able to watch stuff upstairs when the wife is busy downstairs.

My laptop takes a standard HDMI plug, my tablet a mini and DD2's Hudl a micro. I'm fed up with having to swap and change and hunt for the correct one. Much simpler to go wireless surely?

Bit of research on the net and a Fire TV stick seems to fit the bill. That is if I understand it correctly. Can anyone here advise?
I'm not overly concerned about having Amazon Prime ( though I wouldn't turn down a months free trail )
I already have a Now TV box which I use for catch up TV, mainly I player, and All 4, also for the occasional You Tube video.
I use my laptop or tablet to plug into the TV to watch UKTV on demand ( Dave and Yesterday) I also watch the occasional Blinkbox movie.

From what I can gather from the Amazon Fire TV page, I would be able to get I Player and Channel 5 but not Channel 4's All 4.

However am I correct in my understanding that I can 'cast' wire-lessley from my tablet to the Firestick and watch internet TV from there, also view photos etc. In effect do the same as if I was using an HDMI cable? I have a generic tablet at the moment but may be getting a Hudl2 in the near future.

    Thank you

Is All4 important to you? If so keep the NowTV box and use that to use All4. Personally though I'd stream the shows I want to watch from a different source without that intrusive advertising.
