MSE News: 0845 & 0870 price hike warning as Ofcom changes rules on call pricing

Why should they let you? This is an a industry wide change imposed by OFCOM so is exempt from price rise T&C's...
I'm in agreement with the previous poster ec9wrr. OFCOM or whoever it is that regulates it these days did not say telcos have to raise the prices for these calls - they only asked them to state their part of the charge. All they had to do was break down the existing costs into 2 parts.
Therefore if telcos decide to raise the price the customer surely is within their rights to cancel - if it means that the monthly cost is increased by a significant margin? Seems what a reasonable person would expect...0 -
I thought I could cancel because I'm not being given free 0870 calls which is what was on the contract when I signed up.
Ofcom haven't told operators that they can't give these calls for free. Just that they should show the current charge broken into two. The charge they're making and that received by the company I'm calling. I'm happy for them to change the bill to show the breakdown. But not that I should pay more for the calls that were previously free.0 -
When you call an 0870 number your landline or mobile provider has to pay up to 13p per minute (up to £7.80 per hour) to the organization being called.
Until 30 June 2015 this payment was about 0.5p per minute, but it is now the same as for 0871 and 0872 calls. This is why calls to 0870 numbers are no longer inclusive.0 -

Wrong.
I received an email from EE on 29th June 2015, part of which states:-
"From 1 July your bill will reflect these changes, with the EE access charge of 11p per minute being displayed separately. We will also be updating the terms and conditions relating to your inclusive call package. From 1 July 2015, if you’re on a call package that includes calls to 0845 and 0870 the access charge for these numbers will be included in your call allowances but you’ll have to pay the service charge on top."
The part in red,(coloured by me), means 0845 and 0870 are included but the service charge,(outside EE control). is payable.

Is it me or have we gone from a confusing 08xx situation, to a very confusing 08xx situation?0
-
What's confusing?
Every provider has a declared Access Charge which is the same for all 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers.
Every number has a declared Service Charge which is the same when called from all providers.
Connection fees are banned.
Numbers starting 080 are free from landlines and from mobiles.
What we had before was every phone provider publishing hundreds of pages of tariff listings because every number was a different price on every network as both the amount passed on and the amount retained varied both with the number called and by provider used to make the call.0 -

You are missing a digit in each case!
It is not 08x, it is 080/084/087.
084/087 will have an access charge and service charge.
080 will be free to call from any phone.

...... unless you happen to be Lebara mobile who think it's ok to breach the new rules by having differing access charges for different numbers...

Can't find an easy way of reporting them to OFCOM either... I have tweeted Lebara about it and I've been ignored...I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0 -
Ofcom are aware of this breach of GC17 and of several other mobile providers that have made no changes at all since June.
If you had used Lebara to call 118118 and been charged £10.74 for the first whole or part minute and £7.99 per minute (billed per second) after that, you'd never be able to work out that the charges are...
Access Charge £5 per minute
Service Charge £5.74 per call plus £2.99 per minute after 60 seconds
but now those charges have to be separately declared.0
