How are your pets handling the heat today?

Seventh Anniversary Combo Breaker
The Met Office says it's supposed to be 28C today where I live, but my garden's a sun trap and the thermometer out there was reading 33C earlier this afternoon. My 2 dogs haven't known what to do with themselves, poor things.

I've had the curtains closed in the lounge all day and the windows wide open throughout the house. Additionally, I've had a fan running in the lounge all day and angled towards where the dogs have their beds, just to cool them down a bit.

They've had some crushed ice in their water bowl too.

Does anyone else have any tips to pass on for helping to keep cats/dogs and any other type of pet cool? Thanks.

I have a house cat & he is coping remarkably well. When he does get too hot he lays down on the kitchen floor, nice cool tiles there for him. I too have put some ice cubes in his water bowl :D

Ollie and Dexie (we have our grand pup staying) get on the cold kitchen floor.
Fans are running both day and night here both for the dogs and for me.
Water bowls are topped up often with clean tap water.
A wet towel also helps, well it does if they will lay on it. A childs paddling pool is also a good one. But these 2 little sods ( I mean little angels) just do as they like so I just keep my eyes on them. I do give them the odd and I do mean odd ice-cream, that goes down well here. I do make a sort of dog friendly ice with bits of doggy treats pieces of carrot and other raw veg that they like. You could add anything your pal likes though. These 2 do love raw veg so its win win all round. I use just enough liquid to hold it altogether. (Chicken stock if they are lucky.)
I think you are doing all you can to make your furkids cool so relax and enjoy the sunshine xx.
RIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Always in our hearts xxx

  • Cats love it - dog hates it!

She doesn't swim but likes a paddle so we went for a plod up the burn left when the tide goes out - she even let me swoosh water all over her (which she'd usually hate!)

A good 2 hours later and she's still damp and cool :j

If you have a garden a sprinkler can be nice for them to cool down in

I was worried how my cat would cope because he's black and just soaks up heat but he's absolutely loving it. He's found a patch of shade under a garden chair and spent most of the afternoon stretched out with an expression of sheer bliss on his face. We live in a basement flat which never gets particularly warm so he can go inside to nap somewhere cool and dark if it gets too much.

My two are loving it too although Mia got a bit hot and came to sit in front of the fan in the living room.

I put a large plastic bottle of ice on top of my Degu's cage, so he could sit in a little air-con corner, if he wanted to.

    Seemed to work quite well.

Gitdog is being annoying. He's too hot, doesn't know what to do with himself - when he's out he wants to be in, when he's in he wants to be out. So he's settled for complaining at me instead.
He doesn't do water, so can't get a paddling pool or turn the hose on him to cool him down.
And now I've slumped in front of the TV in a knackered sort of a way, he's coming to life and ramping up the annoyingness because he's bored.
    Little !!!!!!.

my springer meggie didn't like the heat much so would retreat to the front of the house which is cooler. ice cubes in water bowl and the occasional 'gravy ice lolly', but she was partial to ice cream too.
and a very short 'furcut' for the summer months!
