I was hoping one of the bits of software mentioned in the articles would trigger a eureka moment for you. Oh well.

With a new internal modem being available for less than 12 quid (not including delivery) it may be worth trying a new one.

My own personal preference is external modems - (in the rare occasions I have to use them) I have never had a problem getting one to work immediately, whereas I have spent hours on some internal ones. Having said that, it's a matter of preference and if you want another piece of kit on the desk.

I'm still happy to detail how to push Windows to one side for a test reinstall, but it will take me quite a bit to type out so I'll do it only if you want to try it.
  • Godders - thanks for the offer but I think I'll stick with getting another modem - not ideal but hey-ho.

Thanks again for your help :)

Can you select which disk to boot from in the bios menu rather than swapping cables and jumpers ? They often get a priority in a list and you can bump drives up and down. A boot manager may be able to do the same thing.
My guess is that you have an interrupt that is shared by a motherboard resourcr and the PCI slot. WinME may be better equiped to share interrupts between devices. You can always try another PCI slot and see if this helps.

Often you have the option to let the bios/motherboard assign interrupts or the operating system. I would always give the operating system no choice in this matter.

I went from win98SE to win2K. I have not had any regrets. If we don't here from you then we can assume you have taken my advice.

PS is there a way of text messaging to this forum ?
  • J_B,

I've got a full bank of slots so can't reallocate the card.

I have also noticed that in the device manager I have a problem with the "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" which is showing the yellow question mark/exclamation. Looking at the internals the sound card is integral to the motherboard so I cannot remove to establish what driver is required.

I'm not having much joy with my new drive and what I thought would be a relatively straight forward thing to do.
    ???
Godders - check the bios but no issue there
  • Full PCI slots is very surprising. What devices do you have in them ?

In a fit of simple troubleshooting (that I should probably have suggested days ago - sorry) try taking each of the other cards out in turn (firewire and USB)

You are going back an OS version (ME to 98) so it may not be able to handle the combination of devices you have installed.

Your onboard soundcard may be a victim of the same symptom or it may just need the correct drivers loaded.
  • this may sound a daft question but where can I find out what driver I need for the sound card - I can't remove anything to look?

If you know what motherboard you have got then check the manufacturers web site - the sound chip provided should be listed in the spec along with the drivers.

If you can still boot into ME then you could also check device manager in there for the name of it.

Bet you didn't think you would make it to hot topic!
  • I use a software called hwinfo32. This gives better description of the hardware you have in your PC..

    Hope this helps.
