New Hard Drive Can't Find Modem

I have installed a second hard drive as I was having loads of issues running WinME. The second hard drive is running under Win98SE and all is working good except I want this to be my main drive. I've set the old drive as slave and the new one as master etc etc, but if I try connecting to the net it just doesn't want to know - says it can't find a modem. Therefore to use the internet I'm having to change the hard drive cables etc and run under the old hard drive.
How can I get the new drive to access the modem. Its an internal SupraSST 56i PRO DF. I have the software cd but even loading the right driver still is no good. Am I not doing something obvious. Any help would be great as it driving me nuts!!! ??? >:( ???
thanks :-/

Have you tried uninstalling the modem completely (from the old drive) before reinstalling on the new drive?0

not done that - what do I do?
thanks0 -
Right click 'my computer' then click 'properties'. In there you need device manager and there will be a list of hardware. You may find that you have some items in 'other hardware' and also a modem under 'network adaptors' (trying to go from memory, been a while since i did it on a 98 / me system)
If you remove them from there and click refresh it should find it and ask for the driver.0 -
s_g,
tried this and works to a point.
Delete, then refresh and it auto detects. It then shows a screen which says "Modem Country Select" and asks me to "select a country". However the drop down list is blank??
If I click on apply it brings up the following statement:
"modem country code cannot be modified when another program is using the selected telephony device".
I previously deleted modems from the other hard drive and closed it down.
I have detached the telephone line into the pc but can't seem to be able to select a home country.
Any ideas anyone?? :-/0 -
For your immediate problem go into Control Panel -> Telephony and set your country and area code before doing anything.
Then go into Control Panel-> Modems. Remove any that are there already.
From memory there are a series of internal modems that are a pig to install even if you have the disks. You have to make sure there is no trace of them and run the setup program on the supplied CD's or downloaded drivers. This is the ONLY way it will be picked up. Check the web sites and documentation and follow it EXACTLY (trust me, I have spent too many hours spent wasting time that give me the right to emphasise this). FYI removing it from your old hard drive will not make one jot of difference - BUT - -examining your old installation and what the modem is called and who supplied the drivers may give you a clue!
Question. Is the 'Modem Country Select' box a normal Windows style box or does it look different (maybe older)?0 -
Godders,
the box appears a standard windows one. When I go into the other hard drive I can view this list from the device manager and country select option.
I'll try your suggestion tonight.
The modem auto selects the internal modem if I delete from the device manager and press refresh. However it adds the modem as something else first(sorry on different pc at work) - I think it says supra2850 but this isn't under the modems its as a separate piece of hardware. It then launches the installation of the SupraSST 56i PRO DF and then installs this under modems.
many thanks0 -
Before you do anything see if there is a readme file or instructions on the disk. It may have to install something before the modem can be added (I have vague memories of some hardware needing to be removed from the PC - run the software from the CD without the hardware being present - then turn off the PC and install the hardware.
As an aside is the modem is currently being listed in the control panel under 'Modems'? (I may be making this more complex than needed). If so there should be a diagnostic or "more info" button somewhere which will let you know if Windows can even talk to the modem at all.
If windows can sucessfully query the modem hardware it may be something in your Dial up connection settings.0 -
I've tried getting the pc to communicate with the modem via the more info route but it says it cannot find it.
I've also just downloaded the Win98 drivers and may try running this from scratch. The old version was run on WinME and maybe the disc drivers supplied were only relevant to this version? I doubt it though.0 -
I think at this stage I would strip all references to the modem out (maybe even to the point of loading up the PC without it in). Then after powering down and inserting it Windows should detect it as new hardware during startup.
( As per the installation manual
" 9. Windows will detect a New modem attached to the system. Press Next to continue the installation.
--Windows 95 users will be prompted to search for a driver and then windows 95 will not find the correct location of the drivers. Specify the location of the drivers as C:\Diamond\Update, Click OK then the modem installation will continue normally.
--Windows 98 users should choose the Search for a Driver in a specific location option. Check the box labeled Specify location and type the name of the directory where the drivers have been extracted C:\Diamond\Update. Click Next then the modem installation will continue normally. " )
The good new is this should be a standard Plug and Play modem rather than a complex one. And the SUP 2840 that it finds it as just share the same chipset (I even got the 9x drivers from Diamond)
I'll go away again now until you have had a chance to try things out - I hate it when PC's don't play nicely.0 -
cheers Godders
thanks for your help0
