Crazy American Airline Flight!

Can anyone help me as last week I was flying from LAX - Heathrow - Dublin but the plane was overbooked so they asked us to take the next flight out which was LA - Chicago - Dublin the next morning in exchange for a $1000 airline voucher. We agreed and arrived in Chicago without a hitch but the flight from there to Dublin was delayed for 7 hours. I didn't know about the EU law until today but I'm confused as to whether I can claim anything as it was a US to UK flight with an American airline and because they already compensated us with $1000 even though that was for taking the next flight which was then delayed.
Any help would be very much appreciated!!

no claim under EU261 as the delayed flight commenced outside the EU on a non-EU airline. Well done on the $1000 though0
