I've had a think about the space and wonder about planting it over with perennials which will provide ground cover and spread over the stumps. Not sure that digging out the stumps will be easy (for me or the digger!).

I'd appreciate any 'expert' views on this plan please.

After being away for almost two weeks I've come home to see the areas of clearance - I'm really pleased that it's all gone. Now I can plan ahead for next year.

Still would appreciate any views about planting perennials in this now almost vacant space. Will they eventually cover the stumps?

An update on the space - after the two bushes were cut down I've left the space bare. It's been a delight to see hordes of green shots come up which, until now, have just been lots of leaves.

Today I've spotted blue flowers, turns out there are loads of grape hyacinths which have not been able to be seen because of the huge bushes. I know they can be invasive so I'll keep an eye on them, but for now they're lovely to see.

erm that's a blue bell of some sort not a grape hyacinth isn't it?

Grape hyacinth is well in flower already and the leaves are more tubular

Definitely not bluebells. I was told it was grape hyacinth by a neighbour so I can't vouch for it.

The flower isn't structured like a bluebell.

Can we have another photo when the flowers open please Gers? I thought they were bluebells too but they could be some type of scilla. Don't look like my grape hyacinths.
