You can collect a Secure Key from any HSBC branch.

Thanks, did not see that as an option.

However as we both work 9-5 and nowhere near a branch it's a PITA.

    However

Token thing arrived today so 5-7 working days as promised.

Unfortunately HSBC are not with the Faster payments so transfer will go tomorrow.
No biggie but most other banks are instant (except N&P who do not work after 5PM or at weekends )

Switch is in progress now for both accounts so after all the effort now need to sit back and reap the rewards.

HSBC are with faster payments, I've made lots since opening my account at all times of day.

Try making a payment on Friday evening  (about 20:00hrs IIRC).

Message pops up saying it will not go until tomorrow.

Only just NOW (10:00) has it reached my Santander account.

Made 2 payments this AM (08:30) from HSBC to Santander and they are still not at Santander yet.

Could be that it's the first payments from her account so will keep an eye on further transactions.

At least they do get there over a weekend unlike N&P who do not do anything after 5PM on a Friday.
  • I find that First payments from one account to another always take longer, especially if the amount is huge. Subsequent payments to and from the main banks are quick, easy and painless. The only one I have to wait for are payments to and from Metro, but its usually an hours wait.

The two small transactions I made this AM (<£2) have just arrived after 2hrs..

So not the quickest but not a problem.

In my experience with two HSBC Advance current accounts making several transactions per day, payments in and out were sluggish, usually taking up to an hour, for the first couple of weeks. Only on one occasion did a payment out take more than the stipulated two hours and that might have been the fault of the receiving bank. After two months of operation, all payments in and out are accomplished within seconds just like Lloyds/BoS/TSB/Clydesdale/Nationwide/Santander etc. (The glaring exception, in my experience, is Tesco Bank which ALWAYS takes about ten minutes to process inward and outward payments.)

This appears to be the standard as Tescos but it's still miles better than the 3-working-days-delay we have to put up with until just a few years ago.

I agree on HSBC - once "run in" for a few weeks, all outgoing payments are pretty instant (recipient bank allowing). I haven't recently had any payments held up by HSBC, though my largest to date was below £4K.

Finally got the £120 switch reward, opened the account on the 14th of July so almost two months later. Looking forward to the ISA £120 :)

HSBC's online banking interface is not exactly user friendly, so I decided to keep the account for incoming salary and direct debits only, and use Barclays instead as my spending account.

I haven't installed the HSBC mobile banking app, is that any better?

The mobile app is a bit newer than their online banking and probably ok if you like doing your banking on a tiny display.

The mobile app also generates a Secure Key so you don't need to use the hideous gadget for logging in and setting up new payees.

Well after all the delays and frustration of the online / postal method of opening the account I decided to pop into a branch to do the actual current account switch.

10 mins with the adviser and it was all sorted. Was given a date of the 10th of Sept for the transfer and it all appears to have gone like clockwork on the day they said.

I noticed the switch would result in the first month of account opening not receiving the £1750 credit in August, so I transferred £1750 in, moved £300 into their Together ISA and then sent the £1450 back the next day. Payday should take care of this month now the switch seems to have been completed... touch wood!
