I'm sorry, but there are far better fantasy novels than the Wheel of Time series. It might have started out being original but it meanders on and on, none of the lead characters are remotely likeable, the story is highly derivative and it follows all of the fantasy stereotypes going.

Modern fantasy authors like Joe Abercrombie and Scott Lynch beat Robert Jordan into the dust.

Having said the above about Robert Jordan, I do quite like Brandon Sanderson. I recently read the first Mistborn book and it was pretty good. The dialog was atrocious but his magic system is unique enough to make me want to read a few more.

I can't disagree about the Wheel of Time but I still enjoyed the series and I read them as they were released.

I don't need the characters to be likeable to enjoy a book, another example id Game of Thrones, all odious with the exception of Ed Stark and perhaps Jon Snow but still a great read. I haven't seen the TV series so have no idea if it follows the books closely.

I loved the Joe Abercrombie First Law series too.

I tend to read non fiction, science and maths books, but I also love a good SciFi/fantasy or detective fiction/thriller to relax with.

I'm currently reading a steampunk series I discovered by accident.

Written by George Mann it's the Newbury & Hobbes series. I bought the first in the series off fleabay for 80p + P&P and while very lightweight I enjoyed it enough to buy the others. It gives me a break from the Quantum Mechanics book I'm trying to get my head round at the moment.

I also recently reread the John le Carre Smiley series, inspired by the very enjoyable recent TV series The Game.

I'd forgotten how good they were and really enjoyed them.

I've yet to read a Hugh Howey I don't like. The Wool Trilogy is amazing, what a concept.

Loved the wool trilogy but struggled with the first Sands book and haven't read any more of the series

I haven't read the Sands books, but his novellas/short stories are amazing. I keep them on my Kobo ready for when I'm not up to reading a full book.

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon which at the moment is 8 books but there will be at least one more. It is an epic story starting in Scotland pre Culloden with time-travellling and amazing characterization.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, I finished reading it a couple of days ago, and started again from the beginning to savour the nuances I didn't get the first time round

Perhaps likeable is the wrong word to describe Rand, Matt and Perrin. They're all idiots who can't see things that are right under their nose. I tried really hard to like the Wheel of Time. I've so far made it as far as book 4 and I might persevere a bit further - I've heard that the series picks up towards the end.

This Wool trilogy sounds interesting - might take a look.
Edit: It's available on audio so I'll add it to my list...
