Hi all,
I'm a fairly voracious reader, and generally I like a good bit of swords and sorcery.
However, recently I've read a few books that have been very good but quite harrowing at the same time...and actually enjoyed them! The most recent was "Wintergirls", so that should tell you the type of thing I mean.
Basically I want something with a good story that's not necessarily an easy read.
Ideas please!

The Malazan series by Stephen Erikson. But beware - there's ten of them and they're all over a thousand pages long.
