From what I've seen, Windows 10 is better than Windows 8, but I'm not sure about up/sidegrading from Windows 7.

Regarding the 1-year to get Windows 10 thing; that's one year to get the licence, but you will be able to reinstall after the end of that year (at no charge). They really want to get everybody shifted onto W10.

Apart from those still using Vista, XP (people still using this?) and Win10 Tech Preview;)

You new car doesn't have a steering wheel? Well we believe that steering wheels are outdated, so we think cars should be steered by synaptic thoughts. I know your car, like 90% of new cars doesn't have a synaptic control feature, but we still decided to remove the steering wheel anyway.

Don't worry. If you don't like not having a steering wheel you can rely on someone else hacking some code to simulate what a steering wheel used to do, but every now and then we will still insist the car reverts to synaptic thought control (which you don't have).

If you think our decision to remove steering wheels was wrong, don't worry, two revisions later and we've reached the same conclusion. Now a steering wheel is a an optional feature free of charge.
Cars, steering wheels, operating systems? Chalk and cheese comes to mind. I can see what you mean but comparisons like that never work in my opinion.

In their eyes, if you're still doing this, then you're a total tech-dinosaur, and why wouldn't you want a nice sparkly new machine with 10 pre-installed on it but with no dvd drive and no BIOS access 'coz why would anyone want that, oh, and we'll be free to mess up your system with compulsory updates as & when we feel like it.........

I mostly agree with mandatory updates - a lot of people put off updates to see if they are okay on other people's computers first and then end up forgetting to update then complain when they have many updates waiting to be installed.

However I am weary that some updates may stop some installations of Windows from working until they are fixed and/or patched. There are also optional updates, such as Silverlight, which I do not use or want.

I have a windows XP web server, Its been running for 4 years with only one reboot, The CPU temps were rising, so i had to open it up and vac the dust out of it. It doesnt crash and it just works so why upgrade?

I bypassed Vista except for a media centre PC where the media centre actually worked where the XP one was flakey.
As soon as Win 7 got stable i put that on there instead and i use Win 7 on most of my machines, but they all have XP on hidden partitions for backup/emergency use.

Ive had several people contact me this year saying their CD/DVD drives stopped working after a windows update.
A couple of registry tweaks and its back. But what on earth were they doing to disable the CD drive?

The US navy just gave Microsoft $9 million for another year's support for XP.
Lots of their systems rely to much on XP. >_<

Under W10, updates will progress the system, which is why they say W10 is the last version. To get any new features MS develop over the years the only way to get them will be via updates.
With the insider programme still running it is less likely that anyone will have difficulties with released updates.
That said, I guess those who constantly have problems will still have problems and still blame them on MS.....

MS have committed to supporting each version of Windows for a certain period of time, and as far as I recall have always stuck to this. So I don't think there's any issues there with keeping an earlier version of Windows. As for other software vendors, they'll keep releasing software for versions that are still in common use. Windows 7 and 8 will I expect continue to be useful and functional for many years yet.

As for the way Windows automatically does lots of stuff, I can see why this is going on. I've realised over time that a remarkable amount of people really know next to nothing about how computers work. People of all age ranges and backgrounds, and even people who've been using computers for a long period of time. A large proportion of Windows installations expire from complete lack of maintenance after about 2 years, often because they're full of malware and the hard drive is full. If they didn't automatically do all the updates they already do, the problems would get even worse. It's frustrating to have MS taking over the computer so much for users who do know more about how things work, but it's a difficult compromise when designing an OS for many users with varying levels of understanding.

I have spent a few hours this weekend successfully sorting out a friend's malware infested windows 7 laptop this weekend using such things as malwarebytes, adwcleaner and the free version of Avast.
Of course if you used a good linux based system like Linux Mint or Ubuntu as your operating system instead you would not have that sort of hassle.
