I'm beginning to get the distinct impression that they (MS) are trying to be the one & only support option with W10... W8 began to move towards it, but I seriously think your typical small independent IT shop/bloke are going to be at a disadvantage, and by extension all users (especially non-techie users) are going to end up at the mercy of MS and it's direct agents....

I've decided I'm going to install 10 on one older machine (which is perfectly happy on W7, btw) and see how it goes..certainly won't be updating my Mini-Gun's gaming rigs straight away, if at all.....

I heard somewhere that windows 10 can be installed for free but for one year only, after that you have to pay a fee. Is this correct or have I been misinformed?

that is correct, if you are running W7 or W8 at present

Sort of... but the way you've worded that could be taken a number of ways.

In particular, 'for one year only' doesn't mean you have to start paying a fee once the year is out, if you already upgraded within the year.

Another way of saying it is this:
    • You can get a permanent upgrade licence to Windows 10, from Microsoft
    • The price of that permanent upgrade is £0, that is it's free, if
      1. you're upgrading from a genuine licensed copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 and
      2. you upgrade within a year of the release on 29 July 2015
    • If you buy that licence after 28 July 2016, or if you don't upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1, the price of that licence will be more (probably quite a lot more)

    No, it is incorrect.

If you upgrade in the first year you can happily reinstall as any times as you want.

If you don't take up the offer you need to pay.

Pricing after the first year will be £99/135Euros (on the nag screen) for the home edition. Pro will be around £199/250Euros. I'm guessing most people will have downloaded W10 well before the free period expires.
Having the preview on my Laptop, I must admit, I prefer W8.1. That may be because I'm used to it and it's quick to get around compared with still finding things in W10. However, I will download the final release version to my desktop as soon as it's available as I've had no trouble with W10 so far and I can't see the point in hanging on to an old system.
All the same reluctance and fear of something going wrong, was about with W8.1 and I've not had any trouble there. All files are backed up, so if it does go belly up, it's not exactly going to be the end of the world.

MS are missing out on the pirates, They could easily add adverts to non genuine versions of windows.
How many will phone to complain?

If the auto update cannot ve disabled then you just need to set your firewall to block it.
No way will I let MS update my PC. Ive see and fixed the aftermath of many of their updates and as above i prefer to let others test them for a few weeks before i let mine update.

And i clone my drive so i can take it back to a state prior to the updates and a restore is much faster than letting windows roll back.

no-one was talking about re-installs, just the initial £0 update to 10 from 7/8, which is only free in year 1...

But in no way are Microsoft "forcing" people to download Windows 10. The patients are doing it voluntarily, like they did in that film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
We're not talking about mind, body and soul here are we? Just an operating system and whether or not to upgrade to Windows 10. :)

I've always been quick to upgrade to the latest versions of Windows and haven't regretted it so far. All versions have provided a platform that I could easily install and run my programs on. No major changes made to the interfaces provided (no Start Menu replacement for Windows 8).

I've been trying the Windows 10 Technical Previews on a spare computer and from what I can see, Windows 10 will do the job well enough. No reason for me to hang back as far as I can see.

You new car doesn't have a steering wheel? Well we believe that steering wheels are outdated, so we think cars should be steered by synaptic thoughts. I know your car, like 90% of new cars doesn't have a synaptic control feature, but we still decided to remove the steering wheel anyway.

Don't worry. If you don't like not having a steering wheel you can rely on someone else hacking some code to simulate what a steering wheel used to do, but every now and then we will still insist the car reverts to synaptic thought control (which you don't have).

If you think our decision to remove steering wheels was wrong, don't worry, two revisions later and we've reached the same conclusion. Now a steering wheel is a an optional feature free of charge.
