Will they try to force Windows 10 on people?

At the moment I am avoiding update downloads for the installation of Windows 10 on my laptop.
The fact that, on the last bunch of updates, I did untick one update related to windows 10, to see it installed anyway, do not fill me with confidence.
My gripe with window 10 is that I apparently will not be able to chose or block any updates Microsoft decide to download on my computer, automatic updates will be compulsory, and as I had a few problems with dodgy Microsoft updates in the past, I do not want not to have a choice.
I wonder if they will dare trick people to download the new operating system once it becomes available?

Why would they, They may heavily push it but they won't force it on anyone.
Even if you get the "Get Windows 10" patch/upgrade option you can still say no to it.
Better to have the occasional issue than have a system, that you don't patch and get malware issues on.0 -
I am also unhappy with the concept of compulsory automatic updates. Firstly as the OP says there have been some dodgy ones in the past, more so lately it seems, and I like to leave them until the next day in case early adopters are reporting issues.
Secondly, there are some optional updates that I simply don't want ... I wonder if there will still be an 'optional' category that can be refused?
Thirdly, if you have a low power machine it can be slowed down by updates running in the background just when you wanted to get on with an important task.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
I doubt if they will force it on people, just as they haven't forced people to move from XP (I imagine a few people are still using 97 or even earlier OSs), but eventually Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 will go out of support as XP has done, and then you're on your own.0

The Previews do not let you disable update, after all they are previews and they are looking for feedback on the latest features, so Microsoft have disabled updates for now.
Come the release you'll have the same options as before, Download and install automatically, Download and notify, of Just Notify.
Non Microsoft patches tend to be optional (ie driver updates) and Windows Update is merely a mechanism to get them to the PC, it there are problems its often the driver manufacturer rather than Microsoft at fault.
And to be honest if you have a low power machine I'd say you would be better downloading and install them automatically, at a time its not in use say 2am in the morning, specifically to avoid that issue. My Atom powered PCs do that for exactly that reason..0 -

That's only two websites, it's all over the internet.
Hopefully it will be the same for windows 10 as they did with X box one, they will just back off if people are so unhappy about it that they will not install windows 10 and go Linux or Apple.
It looks to me that, if you want cheap/free windows 10, you will have to let them experiment with your computer, the other versions, possibly pro, and business and over, will have the possibility to postpone the updates just in case some updates mess up the computers of those unlucky enough to have the home version, until a fix is found and the update is safe.
I for one think that, comparing with what happened in the past with all the previous versions of windows, a lot of ironing out had to be done for at least the first few months after the release, furthermore you don't know if windows 10 will be compatible with some of your existing software or peripherals.
I am wondering why I am thinking more and more about Linux.....0 -
Microsoft's line is here - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dn798755.aspx
Important: Windows Update will be set to automatically install important updates as they become available. You won’t be able to turn off automatic updates in Insider Preview, but you will be able to choose between a fast or slow update cadence. To change when preview builds are installed, open PC settings, click Upgrade and recovery, click Preview builds, and then click Change the time my PC installs preview builds.
Anything else is speculation until the final version of W10 is released or leaked0 -

That seems to be the crux of the matter. People are being sucked in to a new operating system, because it is free. If I was a cynic I would say Microsoft are offering the new drug free because they want a new generation to be hooked into their product.
As for compulsory download updates. What a wonderful way to weed out those who do not have proper licenses. When they check out your system they may have a look at your other software licenses too.
But in no way are Microsoft "forcing" people to download Windows 10. The patients are doing it voluntarily, like they did in that film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".0 -

My understanding is its more support costs, more people on W10 means less they have to support on older code.
Remember its only free if you take the upgrade in the first year, after that its chargeable as ever. If you choose not to upgrade in that first year but do 367 days (2016 is a leap year) after launch then you have to pay for the upgrade.0 -
Well, I should have used "tricked" rather than "forced".
Most people won't know what struck them until something happen to their computer. As for compulsory download updates. What a wonderful way to weed out those who do not have proper licenses. When they check out your system they may have a look at your other software licenses too.
It seems that they will allow the people with a pirated version of Windows to download Windows 10, though it will still be considered as a non genuine copy of Windows.

That's one way to know how many pirated copies there are out there....0
