without knowing gotogate i selected the best flight in terms of timings, airports and price, there are more elements than price to consider when booking a flight

Exactly, one of which should have been the agent you bought from. Next time buy direct from the airline, they would have sold you the exact same trip and you wouldn't have been in this mess.

Of you thought that the advice you've been given is actually about as sensible as it's possible to get?

some advice has been wise and helpful but in some cases were talking 'closing the stable door here', its ridiculous!
i ask you - sensible adult advice forum or a petty useless retrospective take on the situation?

    Bit of both...

Obviously many people read this thread, and some of them may learn from your experience: so there is some point in explaining what you did wrong, although I agree that this has been made far more often than is needed. As for what you can do: I am not aware of anyone who has challenged this kind of thing. There is some relevant law on your side: unfair terms in contracts with consumers have no legal force, while penalty charges are outlawed (see discussions about the fees that credit cards used to charge for missed payments). It is just possible that if you spent a few hours reading about these issues on a forum such as this, and then sent a suitably legal-sounding letter, you might get a reasonable result. If that did not work you would have to use the courts, and the time and expense involved would be out of all proportion to the rip-off charge that you face.

I already gave you advice in my first post. If you want a magic solution to avoid paying a fee to GTG I doubt you'll get that. You booked with GTG, you'll be bound by their T&C. So either pay up or chance it.

People are trying to explain to you the root of the problem. Without this you might avoid GTG next time you fly but simply move on to the next dodgy 3rd party site that promises to save you £5.

Funny thing is when anyone makes a booking online you abide by the companies terms and conditions, everyone ticks them but a few minutes to go through the gobbldegook and find the bits that matter make life a lot easier in the long run.

For this scenario I would suggest you ignore it if it is not too glaring a mistake then chance it as i know personally quite a few people have travelled with name errors before.

I had a colleague called Bryan booked as Brian on a round the world ticket and he never had a problem going through about 15 different airports

At last some reasonable voices, thank you so much for your input - i have heard that the USA will refuse entry for people who have mis-spelled names so im reluctant to take the trip with this in mind.

Thank you once again for your advice

Where have you heard that? US immigration officers are unlikely to even look at your mum's ticket.
