Booking holiday deposit on credit card or debit card?

Hi,

Just wanting some advice, I would always put large purchases on my credit card for the protection. I am going to buy an expensive holiday and a large deposit needs to be paid. They charge a fee for using a credit card, which I would like to avoid. The company and holiday are ATOL protected, so I'm just wondering if I would need the credit card protection, and a debit card would be okay?

Thanks!

  • If you've booked an Atol protected holiday you don't need protection for supplier failure via your credit card.

Depends which company it is and how much the holiday is. If its one of the big operators on our high street ie Thomas cook, Thomson, co op etc then I wouldn't, if its an online one like ice lolly, on the beach etc I might do as not sure if their abta and atol are worth the paper they are written on. Did you know if you pay your balance early at Thomas Cook they can waive the credit card fee, or the cut off charge is £90, so depends how expensive your holiday is and how many points you make paying by a credit card, would you make more points on the card than the charges?
  • Sorry for posting on wrong board, was on my phone and there was only 5 categories showing and the one I picked was the only one similar to my query, no need for sarcastic comments thanks, simple mistake.

Thanks for everyone's advice! It's via an independent travel agent company that works online/over the phone, Blue Bay Travel. I have checked with the CAA website (I think that's it..) and they are def ATOL protected, just wanted peace of mind I think..! Going to ask them to out £100 on CC and rest of deposit on DC, see if they go for that..if not, I still haven't made up my mind what to do.. Lol One minute I'm like i'll just do it and pay, its only £60 fee, then on the other hand, £60 could get us something extra on the holiday and we're already very close to our limit! lol

Why would their Abta membership and Atol not be worth the paper they're written on?

Ice Lolly have neither anyway because they don't sell anything.

Are they only atol protected and not abta, atol only protects flights nothing else. Have you booked with them yet if not try a proper TA preferably one you can see face to face in case of problems some one may price match or beat the price you have.

My above post was for pretty flower. Leyland you posted whilst I was typing. Leyland not worth paper they're written on because the likes of ice lolly aren't very reputable. Not sure what you mean ice lolly don't sell anything why do they have a website then. They say all their packages are atol protected which as before only applies to the flights nothing else.

Atol covers both if it's booked as a package or a flight plus. Blue Bay is a well established agency and are definitely a proper TA. They are members of Abta, and are member of the Mid-Counties Co-operative consortium, and trade using their Atol.
