but you can get that with any domain, if thats your goal then theres no reason to spend £1.5k on one
No, though if your surname is unique and only one domain will do, you might decide to go for it.

If the co.uk is already in use then the owner of that has first call on the .uk name.
Yes, that seems a bit unfair on holders of the me.uk version, who have no chance of getting a chance of the uk version for another year.

Chances are, they saw someone or a new startup business creating a product either called Theoretica or using it as the company name and jumped straight in to buy the domain. It could well have been the one that's using the .us domain now, so the entity that reserved the .com is now trying to get rid.

Some people make a living from predicting the names of new businesses, products, movies, tv shows, etc etc and buying up all the domain names to sell on later.

    Much like patent trolls.

Thanks for the different points of view! I think it is a large part that it is there and the chance may well not come up again. But it would be nice to have it as a professional looking email and web address (I am thinking of using it for performing arts purposes) and it would work if I moved out of the UK. So not that dissimilar to a personalised number plate really.

The .net version would be a pretty international address, and would still look professional whatever part of the world you were in.

To the best of my knowledge, any address, with website & email, will work if you move out of the UK, your web hosting company will ensure that.

But - is the .com version actually a fixed £1.5k? If it's already owned by someone else, it could be negotiated downwards maybe? If it's a first registration, have you tried several hosting companies to see if they vary in their price?

theoretica.com has been registered since 2002. As said earlier in the thread (I think) it redirects to theoretica.us.

I just have. What is "the real equivalent of theoretica.com"? What does that actually mean?

It means Theoretica's real name not the forum user name.

Ah right - thanks. Blonde moment (even though I'm folically-challenged). :D
