Aargh! My domain name - the real equivalent of theoretica.com - has come available for about £1.5k. Or I could get .org .net or . nearly-anything-else for a tenner.

Will the .com be worth it in the long run? Much of me thinks .something-cheap would be just as good and who pays attention to domain endings, but there is this lingering grab it while it is available... and it would stop anyone else doing anything I disliked with it.

Thoughts? Comments?

Why do you need it? Have you thought about getting the new .uk domain instead? Have a look for it on https://www.123-reg.co.uk (it's available)

I believe money spent on a domain is relevant to the amount of money to be spent marketing that domain name.

Therefore if I was paying £1500 for that domain name, I would expect the marketing budget to be about 50-100 times that, to get that domain recognised.

Otherwise, what's the point? You just look like some halfwit with a personalised number plate.

A quick google search only throws up http://www.theoretica.us/ which is some horrible flash based site the equivalent of an e-book promoting some boom-box looking bit of kit so standing out from the crowd wouldn't he hard. Just why theoretica would be a desirable domain rather escapes me though.

I agree with chunter, the days when anything other than .com meant you were a nobody and your site was doomed to failure are gone.

Most people don't even look at the domain names these days.

The point is that you will then have an email address that is easily recognisable as yours, easier for people to remember and you will no longer be hostage to the whims of gmail, yahoo etc or your ISP.

It all depends. What the domain will be used for. Personal or business.
    And what kind of business.

I would say go for the new short .uk domain. It is about time UK introduced these.
Also reflects you're from Great Britain. :D

Probably best not to pay for a .eu domain for more than 2 years though...

but you can get that with any domain, if thats your goal then theres no reason to spend £1.5k on one

If you *really* want it, haggle hard. If someone is selling it, they don't want it. If they're selling it for under a grand (UK), they know it's not a great name and are wanting rid. Make a lowball offer, you might get a result.

But frankly a .com isn't 'all that', any more
