I've yet to get stopped at the traffic lights and I'm a regular user of the crossing.0

The irony is; going north through the tunnel, entry is still controlled by traffic lights, which would give you plenty of time to hand over your £2.50 to a Man in a Booth.
The traffic lights are only active to stop traffic so that fuel tankers (and other hazardous loads) can go through the tunnel without other traffic - the tankers wait at a holding area on the south side until there are enough of them to justify stopping traffic, and are then escorted through the tunnel.
The traffic lights will also stop traffic if there is an overheight vehicle - the lefthand tunnel bore is lower than the righthand tunnel bore, so sometimes large lorries don't read the signs and end up trying to go into the wrong tunnel.
The traffic lights are also obviously used when there's an accident or breakdown in the tunnel - surprisingly (or perhaps not), a fair number of breakdowns are caused by people running out of fuel...0 -
Finally managed to get the £35 "fine" i paid after receiving the letter refunded a couple months after a trip I made in May. The signage for this is completely atrocious.
We made our first trip across the crossing in May too and only yesterday received a PCN! Could we ask on what grounds you successfully disputed the PCN?0 -

lack of signage essentially - did not know there was a toll.0 -

Wasn't there already an "old school" road sign for a Toll? Perhaps that would have been a better choice than the red "C"?
Personally, I would have put the word "toll" on the signs next to the "C" - there is plenty of space on most of them to do that.0 -
I drove through the Dartford Crossing this weekend - You can't miss the signs - they are massive (and there are several of them from about 2 miles from the crossing onwards) and clearly say you have to paywithin 24 hours of crossing - and don't look anything like adverts.
Sorry I think to say you didn't see them is unlikely to get you off.
What do you mean you can't miss them? Not one sign says that there is a toll you have to pay. Just cryptic references to "search online" .0 -
I was thinking the same on my recent trip 'under and over', the signs are terrible.0

Think the Dept of Transport needs to update their website!

Road charging
Road charging was first introduced in central London and within
a small area in Durham. The white on red “C” symbol is used
on signs in both schemes and will, in future, be used to indicate
road-charging schemes that might be introduced elsewhere. The
symbol is not currently used for toll roads and tolled crossings,
such as the M 6 Toll motorway and the Dartford Crossing.0
