But there was no overtaking. :huh:0 -

Well, a rough guess would be, from what I can remember, there are two possibilities. One being the driver of one car signalling to another to overtake, by putting an arm out of the window and making a reverse beckoning motion.
Or, sticking ones arm out of the window and keeping it static, to indicate that you are moving right to overtake a vehicle ahead.
Back in the day, we all had to learn about hand signals, because there were still far too many cars on the road that were not built with electrically illuminated indicator signals.0 -

None of the hand signals, however, are an invitation to overtake. They are one bit of the highway code that does not seem to have changed:
Nowhere on that page does it say 'please overtake me'.
There is no 'overtaking/overtake me' hand signal - only signals indicating intention to move, turn, or reduce speed.
In MY day (the early 90s), we had to learn about hand signals because they were still in the Highway Code. Just as they still are today.0 -
Never assume anything!
I used to live in the first house on a right, so I'd indicate right to turn into my street from the main road, then often need to stop and wait (for oncoming traffic) whilst still indicating right to turn into my drive.
The amount of times I was almost rear ended by a following car who couldn't fathom why I'd turned a corner and not suddenly sped up and whisked away was unbelievable.
Fortunately nobody did ever hit me, but I took some verbal abuse during those years!0
