As a follow up to my original post - I found the Norton (somewhat wishy-washily) admit that NIS and Live update flip outs may cause Virtual Memory options... which surprise surprise is exactly what i saw...
just in case it helps someone (until they too disable/uninstall NIS and go for a variety of free stuff/cheaper/better alternatives)...here is the link on the Norton site for just this issue!

  • Wow, thanks everyone for your help and advice, I think my husband has taken it on board as he has not mentioned Norton in the last couple of weeks!!!

Advice number 2 then, I am lazy and very computer illiterate, what should I install that does not require me to do manual updates and keeps working on a satifactory level at all times?? (OOh yes and is free if possible!!)

I currently run AVG free edition & Sunbelt Kerio personal firewall. My husband is obsessed that Norton is best and 'these freebies are not as good'. Any advice????

Nothing wrong with what you have installed as post #1.

  • currently in pcFormat they tested 11 anti virus packages. Norton came number 10 detecting only 62% of viruses.

the number 2 spot (detecting 93% ) was one of 'those freebies' http://www.free-av.com/ if your interested.

norton isnt that good. you pay each year for subscription. and it is a terrible resource hog and slows systems donw to a crawl.

    Which anti-virus was number one?
  • cant remember now need to dig out the issue!

i only remember teh number 2 one as it was the highest rated free one. the top one was definitely paid for.
  • The only problem with what I have installed already is that the "free" editions expire after 30 days, after which time I have been having to remove and re-install them as things don't seem to run quite the same after the expiry time. Any other suggestions.

The top AV in the PC Pro AV test in the September issue was Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com (£28 inc VAT per year). Avira (http://www.free-av.com) (free or paid for) came second. They did note that Avira was very naggy, everytime it downloaded an update it would prompt you to upgrade to the commercial paid version.

If you can live with that, go with the free version of Avira, if not, go with Kaspersky (and get a 15% discount if you go through Quidco!), or http://www.steganos.com which is essentially a rebadged version of Kaspersky (it uses the same AV engine) and works out at £19.95 inc VAT
