It was much cruder than that. The D(V)SA said that 99% of candidates had some professional tuition. Successful candidates had about 42 hours of lessons plus 20-odd hours of private practice.
This seems to have been based on surveys of test candidates. Unfortunately, most learners in my experience have only a rough idea of how many hours of lessons (especially if the parents paid!), and no clue at all about how much private practice, which by its nature is informal and unstructured. So the DSA figures are based largely upon guesswork.0 -
The figures I was talking about weren't from any survey but they'd be about as good as guesswork given that just because the candidate presented in a private car didn't mean they hadn't had any professional tuition.0
