You know very well what you SHOULD do but what you actually do is entirely up to you!

I had the same "problem" when I joined Scottish Power in that my joining offer included £70 of shopping vouchers. They sent the £70 of vouchers out first after 2 weeks and then again after 3 months.

I emailed SP and told them about it. They replied with a nice email back saying that I should enjoy the vouchers.

    So I did.

Same I cannot say the same about their billing system though.

Personally, I wouldn't think twice about it. And I think 99% of the population wouldn't either, no matter what is said on here.

I was on a campsite last week and lost £60.

    Nobody handed it in.

    Sad world.

Really? A criminal conviction for theft? Do you have any links to similar cases?

You don't need links to similar cases to know it is theft, and as such a criminal conviction could happen.

There were no links to similar cases when the first person was prosecuted for driving while using a mobile phone. There were no links to similar cases when the first pub landlord was fined for allowing smoking in his pub after the ban.

The internet isn't the be all and end all, and just because it hasn't been mentioned on the internet doesn't mean it can't happen in the future.

Shops, Manufacturers and the Police take voucher fraud very seriously these days. If you don't believe me perhaps you will believe the internet, try searching for something like "voucher fraud".

"Voucher Fraud" comes up with stories of people mass producing vouchers to produce fraudulent copies. Not spending a voucher that was sent to them in error.

I can't see the local cop shop taking it seriously at all, if the bank called them and said " we sent Mr Jones two £20 vouchers instead of one by mistake, and he spent them both!", what do you think they'd do? Absolutely nothing! This is not "voucher fraud".
  • I once had something similar whereTSB accidentally gave me 2x £25 as a goodwill gesture. I went into the bank and they did just tell me to keep it.

I'd err on the side of honesty.

Keep it, but report it, I expect they would tell you to keep it anyway.

I'd do the same in my company, you would not inconvenience a customer who had spotted a mistake you made but would enable you to check their procedures to ensure it is not a fault in their system that could be doing this over and over.

It would not be good customer service to demand you sent it back or have it cancelled, it would be a goodwill gesture for your honesty.

I think if you're feeling a bit unsure about what to do then that's probably your conscience telling you you shouldn't spend the second voucher, however tempting :) You might end up feeling guilty afterwards and not enjoy the things you bought with it. I agree with the forumers suggesting that you give the bank's customer service a call/email.

Should you spend it, you know that the answer is no. Would I spend it, No, I would take it into my local branch next time I was in town, less hassle than trying to phone.
