passport number required to book flight, or just online check in?

I'm not saying that it can't happen, but I suspect it's due to a travel agent not inputting partial API data into the system correctly.
I'm very careful about my API data after a corporate travel agent entered an incorrect PP number on my PNR, I missed it and got stuck being grilled in the US for several hours, they are not keen on people who turn up and attempt global entry using a passport that while being enrolled in Global Entry didn't match the APIS/secure flight data they had received.
As InsideInsurance says if a PP number was required at time of booking it would be a nightmare for those with several PPs to manage, I'm sure the issue would be all over FlyerTalk had that already happened.0 -
