Rejecting Desktop PC under Consumer Contract Regulations

Hi all
Just wondering if anyone can let me know if I have the ability to cancel a recent purchase from PC world.
On Thursday last week, I ordered and paid online for a Lenovo Q190 desktop PC. I collected it in store the next day. Over the weekend I have tried to connect it to my TV using the HDMI port at the back of the unit but this does not work. I have spent hours trying various things and searching forums but am having no luck. On the Lenovo forum, several people seem to have similar problems and, whilst I can't find a definitive answer, it appears that the problem is to do with the 'refresh rate' settings.
Anyway, with more hours and compromises (probably buying additional cables and using VGA - which I don't want to do as my home entertainment system is all connected using HDMI) I could probably get the unit to work. However, I'm now just fed up trying to get it sorted and I'd like to just get my money back and opt for a different desktop.
I don't know if the unit is faulty but I guess not. It's just going to require additional expense in some shape or form (additional components/techie guy time/my time) to get it running.
The consumer contracts regulations state that I have 14 days to reject and get a refund. Does an item have to be faulty to reject it? And does this transaction count as I ordered and paid online, but picked up from the store?
Also, I've obviously opened the box and tried to connect the unit...would this affect my right to reject?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

are you setting the machine up correctly ?
win 8.1 = win key + c , "project" then duplicate ,
however if you have already done this , and it did not work , I cannot help
refresh rate on hdmi is different than refresh rate on VGA , hdmi is a digital signal , that is converted to vid , via your TV0 -
Which TV?

I don't even get to that stage. With the HDMI plugged in, I turn on the unit and I get the lenovo logo on screen (so it works initially). I then get the turning circle for a few seconds but the screen then turns off. So I can't see what's happening to make any changes.0

ok ,"With the HDMI plugged in" , is your normal monitor still plugged in at this point?0

Refresh rate/resolution out of bounds for the TV I suspect, some TVs can also give faulty EDID info. More of a problem with older equipment.

Do you have a monitor you can plug this into other than the TV ?
As Nifty asked above, can you post exact TV model ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
agreed , that is a possibility , however I was waiting for the OP to return , and tell us if he was using 2 displays (computer and TV) , or just plugging the tv in on its own , I have a h81 board , with VGA and HDMI , but win 8.1 needs to be told where to send the signal too.
" I then get the turning circle for a few seconds but the screen then turns off. So I can't see what's happening to make any changes. "
one display or two?0 -
If it takes this much trouble to get a function that you specifically expected to work (HDMI) then I'd claim "fault".
Print off your and others evidence of the Q190 HDMI issue; put everything back in original packaging and take with receipt back to PCW. Take a scan of receipts et al. Don't say anything like "I'm sure VGA will work." Don't leave until a refund has been agreed. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
Thanks all, I'm not at home just now but my TV was bought in Argos a couple of years ago and is an own brand I think. The reason I don't think it's the TV as I've had my current PC connected to it via HDMI since I got the TV. I use my PC as my home entertainment system.
I presumed I could just change the cable from one PC to the other and start using it but obviously not!!0 -
you omitted to tell us if you were simply unplugging your VGA , and using HDMI or where using 2 monitors (on boot up)
does the machine start ON VGA when an additional hdmi cable is plugged in?
win key + P is your link to setting up additional monitors , have you tried it?0 -
I don't have a VGA cable or separate computer monitor. I've always just used my TV as a monitor with a HDMI cable to my PC. Sounds like I may have to purchase a VGA cable and use that instead. At the moment, because I only have a HDMI cable, I can't see what's happening with the PC when I switch it on so I can't set it up or make changes etc0
