Do I need to tell Sky I'm leaving?

We're switching our phone and broadband from Sky to BT (but keeping Sky TV). The reason is that we want to upgrade to Fibre and get BT Sport, so in this rare case moving to BT works out cheapest.
What I can't quite work out is this: I'm not tied in with Sky, but do I still need to inform Sky? Do I need to give Sky notice? Or will BT handle everything?

Are you porting the number from Sky to BT or getting a 'new' number, if you are keeping your existing number, then BT let Sky know ( so the number can be ported, or returned to BT if it were a BT number in the first place,) but I would call Sky anyway , otherwise you may end up in a situation where you get dialtone and can make outgoing calls , but incoming calls don't work ,
If you are not keeping the same number, then there is no tie up between the BT service and Sky's service so you should call Sky to cancel your service with them0 -
Porting the number, but ok I'll call to let them know. Was hoping to avoid having to make another call.0

If you look at the Ofcom website new rules come in on 19th June where you will not need to tell your existing provider and MAC codes should become a thing of the past.
I was told this today by BT when I was calling requesting my MAC code. I think I've had quite poor service from BT and am on my 3rd Home Hub, it does seem better now than it's been but when I had problems I found their initial customer service terrible, but later it was good. Most people though say they are very reliable.0 -
Don't ever trust a provider who promises to 'do it all for you'-it invariably ends in tears. You still have to give Sky 30 days notice, even if out of minimum term, so once your switch date is confirmed, call them to check that they are aware of your departure. No free lunch, and no free laptop

This doesn't add up really. I ordered yesterday and the switch date is just over 2 weeks away. How could I ever have given 30 days notice?0

I switched from Sky to BT, and did not need to tell sky. BT Notified Sky, I got an email from Sky confirming that they had notification from BT and the changeover date. The cancellation period seemed to be overridden and two weeks later my number ported to BT from Sky at 2PM in the afternoon with no problem.0

Switched from Sky to Plusnet. Plusnet handled it all and I didn't need to contact Sky. I received a letter from Sky saying they were sorry I was leaving and that it was not too late to see if they could keep my custom.
Switch happened in around 2 weeks and Sky simply charged up till then.0 -
With Sky, tv needs 30/31 days' notice ,but phone/bb only two weeks, which is the average time taken for changeover.0

2 weeks is very fast, 3/4 weeks is more typical. No free lunch, and no free laptop
