So you are paying £2600 a year? They saw you coming! You should be paying less than half of that.

We got quotes from three different companies and played them against each other. This was the best we got. Would be interested to see evidence of them "seeing us coming", though.

Our local council threatened a fine because they demanded to see business waste transfer notes (i.e. confirmation that it's taken away by licenced waste carriers).
We once had them visit us at work. They first turned up when I wasn't in the office, and expected other staff to a) drop everything and b) produce the evidence. They weren't happy at being asked to return the following morning, I don't know if they suspected we didn't have licences (we did) when they couldn't be produced instantly, but I didn't get the impression they'd be friendly if you didn't.

We've had two checks in the past 18 months, though our local Council on the whole are very nice, very reasonable and nice enough to deal with.

I find it crazy how small businesses from home can't use their recycling bins to be honest. If the stuff is getting recycled, then surely the council should be encouraging it

Because at the end of the day a small business from home is still a small business. Who defines what a "small business" is? Is it based on turnover? Profit? How many staff you have? How much rubbish and recycling you produce?

Collecting rubbish costs money and recycling rubbish costs money. You can't have one rule for one person and another rule for a different person.

Yeh but they should be trying to support businesses. There is no easy alternative solution. Do they expect us to have biffa bins if we're throwing a few sheets of a4 paper a day?

Okay, you've got to be sensible- a few sheets of A4 paper is slightly different to reams and reams of paper, cardboard, plastic wrapping etc. We go through around a ton of rubbish per month and have two huge wheelie bins collected weekly. If you only need a small bin and it's collected less regularly it's not going to costs hundreds of pounds per month.

You're running a business. Businesses have costs. This is one of them.

Also, your "small home business" has a turnover of £2,000,000.00 per year. I wouldn't really say that's "small".

For my one man band, now retired, in TV repairs.
I made a point that when sets had to be scrapped the customer collected it and took it to the refuse tip himself. Everything else was insignificant and either went into my normal waste or the occasional trip to the tip. With a turnover of just a few £k a year I could do this and nobody was any wiser as electronic hobbyists would be putting similar stuff in their bins. Obviously if you are getting rid of a ton of waste per year you have to do it properly and charge your customers accordingly, it ain't cheap.

    We use Biffa;

    Waste Type: General Waste
Container Description: Wheelie Bin x 2
    Price per lift: £17.71
    Daily Rental: £0.15
    Visits Per Week: 1
    Cost per Quarter: £643.81

You will also be paying around £80.00 per plus VAT per year for an EPA Certificate from Biffa....
    You are being robbed....
That's why I started using our local council Trade Waste Service.
EPA certificate £20.00 no VAT per year !!
