Tax refund, how long?

In late May we bought a second car, my husband and I completed the V5, changing the registered keeper of the existing car, which I am using, and he is using the new car.

Tax was due on 1.6.15, he had already paid for the vehicle tax sometime in May by direct debit, when he was the registered keeper.

We got the log book through from DVLA as car now being registered in my name.

Vehicle tax has since been debited from his account, but obviously I am the registered keeper.

Do we wait until the DVLA "automatically refund" him any vehicle tax due before I pay for tax in my name? This automatic refund isn't happening very quickly.

It is still shown online as taxed until June 2016. I know it should be taxed in my name but he says don't tax it until he has received his refund.

OP you are aware that when you changed the registered keeper to yourself that the existing tax became invalid and the car became untaxed. You need to check the tax status of the car urgently, I suspect it currently has no valid tax on it.

The current rules for VED are that when you transfer a car to another keeper and the DVLA send out a new V5 as a new keeper then any tax still on the car at that point is cancelled and the new keeper is required to tax it.

Put the registration and make into the link below and see what comes back.

    Thanks for the replies.

I am unsure why DVLA still continued to debit my husband's account for car tax after the registered keeper had been changed.

When trying to pay tax online the following message appears:

"Your vehicle will be taxed from 01 June 2015 Are you aware that your vehicle's current tax is not due to expire until 01 June 2016?
However, if you have been told to tax by DVLA, please continue with the transaction"

I haven't been "told". There doesn't appear to be a telephone number to speak to anyone at DVLA about this either.

That 's quick. We are on day 14 since the direct debit and still no refund.

I've managed to send DVLA an email after finding a link. Apparently they should respond within 3 working days.

I've recently changed my car and after waiting 6 weeks for my tax refund I contacted them by email, this was their reply:

I am sorry to hear you have not received your refund within our usual timescale.

Your enquiry has been passed to the Vehicle Customer Services Refunds Section for investigation. They will contact you within 6 weeks.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience with this matter.

    Not impressed

I sold my car 23rd May, posted back the V5 on 27th May by second class post, and the refund cheque arrived last Monday, so less than 2 weeks after posting.

When you transferred the ownership of the vehicle you would have completed section V5C/3 of the registration document, that has been successful as you say that you now have the vehicle registered in you name.

The submission of the V5C/3 should trigger a process where the current vehicle tax is cancelled which generates an automatic refund to the former keeper, your husband. (I'm not sure of the time scale of this .... comments vary!)

As you have now become the new keeper you are expected to know (rightly or wrongly) that you must tax the vehicle as soon as you become the new keeper. Therefore you should make your own application to tax the vehicle, paying by whatever method you choose.

The way the new system works you (jointly - as a couple) will in effect loose 1 months tax, your husband will be refunded for FULL months of tax remaining when the transfer was advised; and you (as the new keeper) must tax in full months from the begining of the month when the transfer was advised. All vehicle sales or transfers now generate a double tax take for the month when sale or transfer takes place ... (no comment here - thats a different matter!)

You say that your husband had paid for the previous tax by direct debit, although you didn't say what the payment period was; it could be monthly, six monthly or yearly.

The current online record is showing the vehicle as taxed because of your husbands previous application, now that the DVLA know about the vehicle transfer that tax will be cancelled and you must make a new application to tax the vehicle as the new keeper.

There will come a point where the DVLA record is updated to reflect the transfer and the vehicle will be shown as untaxed unless you have already submitted your own application.

I would suggest you get your own application for tax in as soon as possible to ensure continuity. Once you've done that I don't think this is anything to loose sleep over.

The reason I know about this is because we recently transferred ownership of a car between my two daughters and this fine detail came to light!

    Hope this helps.

... The current rules for VED are ...

Sorry but just on a small point of order, the term VED (vehicle excise duty) is no longer used. We all know that paying for the 'tax disc' is just that ... it's a tax. For many years the powers that be were happy for it to called 'a duty' to avoid the negative connotations of the word tax.

However they've given up on that and now all government references are to 'vehicle tax'

    :(
