Beware of the potential health risks from storing alcohol in plastic containers.MalcolmsWit wrote: »We take two plastic bottles with us to the Canaries and transfer from the glass bottles. We always try and purchase our whisky etc in plastic bottles in the resort as it is much cheaper than buying at the airport. The idea of saving the plastic bottles and transferring drink from the glass bottle is a good idea. we agree it much safer (and Lighter) to bring back drink in your hold case in plastic bottles. we have never heard of alcohol in plastic bottles being a "health " issue especially as it is sold both in the resort and at the airport in plastic bottles. Custom officers are very hot on monitoring flights coming back from the Canaries it you exceed your limit of 1 litre per person,0

 That's what I do.
 1L spirits in a glass bottle = 1.5Kg
 1L spirits in a plastic bottle = 1Kg
Purchases in the local shop are Duty PAID. It's just that the duty over there is a lot less than in the UK.
Lots of Duty Free shops are a rip off.

The drinks might well be duty paid in the Canaries but they are not duty paid in the EU. Because of this you are still only entitled to bring back 1L per person irrespective of whether you made the purchase in a Canaries supermarket or in the airport duty free shop.0

We do the same {decant into plastic bottles} while in Tenerife but as I kept glass bottles from before the 9/11 problems I just transfer and reseal into the glass ones when we return home the "specials" we save for Christmas/treat days.:)0

The possible health issue arise from re-using plastic bottles.0

True but it's probably the stubborn 1% that gets you.pendragon_arther wrote: »What are the health issues? Like Domestos I thought alcohol kills 99% of household germs.0

we always buy 1 litre each a gin and a whisky in plastic bottles in one of the local shops and put in our hold luggage. It far cheaper in the resort than at the airport on the aircraft. We have never had a problem. We notice there are always more customs officers when a flight from the Canaries arrive so it is probably not worth chancing exceeding your limit.0

I'd be more worried about soluble carcinogens from plastic leaching into the booze than germs. No doubt there's "no evidence", and if gin and whisky are actually sold in food-grade plastic bottles the risk should be low.pendragon_arther wrote: »What are the health issues? There are warnings about reusing plastic water bottles however, and these should obviously not be used for alcohol, which is a much stronger solvent than water.Evolution, not revolution0
